Installation 17
ExaSAN A08S-PS User’s Manual Chapter 4 Installation This chapter provides instructions for installing necessary components of the Accusys RAID system, as well as upgrades you may wish to install to your system. Basic Installation Before your RAID system is ready to be connected and powered on, you must do the following: • • Install the hard disk drives. Install the Re-drive card in the host server.
Chapter 4 – Installation Static electricity can damage electronic components. To guard against such damage: Work in a static-free environment. Wear a grounded anti-static wrist strap. Store uninstalled components in anti-static bags. Handle PCBs by their edges and avoid touching chips and connectors.
ExaSAN A08S-PS User’s Manual Installing the Hard Disk Drives The RAID system is shipped with the disk trays installed in the chassis. Follow the instructions in this section to install hard disk drives in the disk trays. To remove the disk tray: 1. Unlock the rear panel door and pull it open. 2. Push the button on the disk tray to release the handle, and pull the disk tray out. To secure the hard disk drive onto the disk tray: 1.
Chapter 4 – Installation To reinsert the disk tray: 1. Keep the handle lifted as you insert the disk tray back into the empty slot. 2. Push the handle down to lock the disk tray into place. 3. Close and lock the rear panel. Installing the Re-drive card The Re-drive card is compatible with PCI Express slots x4, x8, and x16. Read the pre-installation notices earlier in this chapter before proceeding. 1. Make sure the host server is turned off. 2. Open the server case. 3.
Connections 22
Chapter 5 – Connections Chapter 5 Connections This chapter provides instructions for making connections and powering on your RAID system. After you have installed the necessary components, your RAID system is ready to be connected and powered on. Connecting to the Host Server z Insert one end of the external PCIe x4 cable into the external PCIe x4 port on the back of the RAID system, and the other end into the external PCIe x4 port of the Re-drive card.
ExaSAN A08S-PS User’s Manual Removing the External PCIe x4 Cable z Put your finger into the ring of the external PCIe x4 cable connector and pull gently to release it. Do NOT remove the external PCIe x4 cable forcibly in any other way, as this will damage the cable. Connecting to a Power Source and Powering On 1. Plug the power cables into the power socket(s) on the back of the RAID system, and connect the other end to a power source. 2. Press the power switch on the front of the RAID system.
Status Indicators and BIOS 25
ExaSAN A08S-PS User’s Manua Chapter 6 Status Indicators This chapter explains how to identify the status of the ExaSAN A08S-PS with LED lights and beeper activity.
Chapter 6 – Status Indicators Beeper Activity Two types of beeper alerts may occur when the system is powered on: • Long beeps with one second pauses in-between: the controller is malfunctioning and the host server can not detect the disks in the RAID system. See “Controller Maintenance”, page 30. • Three short beeps: the hard drive, fan module or power supply is malfunctioning and must be replaced. See “Replacing a Disk”, page 29 and “Power Supply and Fan Module Maintenance”, page 31.
Maintenance 28
Chapter 7 – Maintenance Chapter 7 Maintenance This chapter explains how to identify and replace faulty modules of your RAID system. You may need to send the ExaSAN A08S-PS RAID system to your service provider for maintenance. Always power on the RAID system before the host server to ensure that data on the hard disk drives are properly accessed and displayed correctly. When a module fails, an audible alert sounds. To turn off the audible alert, open RAIDGuard X and disable the beeper.
ExaSAN A08S-PS User’s Manual Before replacing the hard disk, make sure the new disk is greater or has the same memory capacity than the failed disk. 1. Unlock the rear panel door and pull it open. 2. Push the button on the disk tray to release the handle, and pull the disk tray out. 3. Loosen the screws on the disk tray and slide the hard disk drive away from the connectors to release it. 4. Insert the new hard disk drive into the disk tray, with the connectors facing outward. 5.
Chapter 7 – Maintenance When a controller has been removed, the hard disk drives it controls are not active, and data stored on the hard disk drives is not lost. Power Supply and Fan Module Maintenance The power supply or fan module may be malfunctioning if you hear three short beeps when the system is powering on. In the event of power supply failure, the power supply fail indicator LED on the rear of the RAID system also turns red.
Appendices 32
Appendix A – Q&A Appendix A Q&A Q1: When turning on the Windows host, “Find no RAID card” appears, how can this be handled? Ans: Please make sure the PCIe cable is properly connected to the back of the host server and RAID system. In Windows, check “Device Manager” to confirm that the correct driver has been installed for the Re-drive card. Q2: When turning on the MAC host, after entering the GUI and adding a controller, there is no device listed.
ExaSAN A08S-PS User’s Manual Q4: In the Vista & Windows 7 Environment, after having confirmed that the files on the installation CD have been completely installed, why does it still show “Find no RAID card”? Ans: Windows Vista has the built-in ability to automatically reduce the potential of security breaches in the system. It does that by automatically enabling a feature called User Account Control (or UAC for short).
Appendix A – Q&A Q7: When inserting the HDD into my A08S-PS, why does RAIDGuard X show the HDD mode as Lock? Ans: When a HDD can be locked, it shows that this hard drive contains metadata created by the A08S-PS, and shows that it was previously used. To erase the data on the HDD, simply unlock the HDD. Q8: How can a spare HDD be set-up? Ans: The A08S-PS automatically treats an unused HDD as Globe Spare HDD.
