KickbackandRelatedWarnings
Kickbackisasuddenreactiontoapinchedorsnaggedrotatingwheel,backingpad,brushoranyother
accessory.Pinchingorsnaggingcausesrapidstallingoftherotatingaccessorywhichinturncausesthe
uncontrolledpowertooltobeforcedinthedirectionoppositeoftheaccessory’srotationatthepoint
of
thebinding.
Forexample,ifanabrasivewheelissnaggedorpinchedbytheworkpiece,theedgeofthewheelthatis
enteringintothepinchpointcandigintothesurfaceofthematerialcausingthewheeltoclimboutor
kickout.Thewheelmayeither
jumptowardorawayfromtheoperator,dependingondirectionofthe
wheel’smovementatthepointofpinching.Abrasivewheelsmayalsobreakundertheseconditions.
Kickbackistheresultofpowertoolmisuseand/orincorrectoperatingproceduresorconditionsandcan
beavoidedbytakingproperprecautionsasgiven
below.
a)Maintainafirmgriponthepowertoolandpositionyourbodyandarmtoallowyoutoresist
kickbackforces.Alwaysuseauxiliaryhandle,ifprovided,formaximumcontroloverkickbackor
torquereactionduringstartup.Theoperatorcancontroltorquereactionsorkickbackforces,if
properprecautionsaretaken.
b)Neverplaceyourhandneartherotatingaccessory.Accessorymaykickbackoveryourhand.
c)Donotpositionyourbodyintheareawherepowertoolwillmoveifkickbackoccurs.Kickbackwill
propelthetoolindirectionoppositetothewheel’smovementatthe
pointofsnagging.
d)Usespecialcarewhenworkingcorners,sharpedgesetc.Avoidbouncingandsnaggingthe
accessory.Corners,sharpedgesorbouncinghaveatendencytosnagtherotatingaccessoryand
causelossofcontrolorkickback.
e)Donotattachasawchainwoodcarvingbladeortoothedsawblade.Suchbladescreatefrequent
kickbackandlossofcontrol.

SafetyWarningsSpecificforGrindingOperations:
a)Useonlywheeltypesthatarerecommendedforyourpowertoolandthespecificguarddesigned
fortheselectedwheel.Wheelsforwhichthepowertoolwasnotdesig ned cannotbeadequately
guardedandareunsafe.
b)Theguardmustbesecurelyattachedtothepowertoolandpositioned
formaximumsafety,sothe
leastamountofwheelisexposedtowardstheoperator.Theguardhelpstoprotectoperatorfrom
brokenwheelfragmentsandaccidentalcontactwithwheel.
c)Wheelsmustbeusedonlyforrecommendedapplications.Forexample:donotgrindwiththeside
ofcutoffwheel.Abrasive
cutoffwheelsareintendedforperipheralgrinding,sideforcesappliedto
thesewheelsmaycausethemtoshatter.
d)Alwaysuseundamagedwheelflangesthatareofcorrectsizeandshapeforyourselectedwheel.
Properwheelflangessupportthewheelthusreducingthepossibilityofwheelbreakage.Flanges
for
cutoffwheelsmaybedifferentfromgrindingwheelflanges.
e)Donotuseworndownwheelsfromlargerpowertools.Wheelintendedforlargerpowertoolisnot
suitableforthehigherspeedofasmallertoolandmayburst.
