Battery Power Ratings
THERE ARE TWO DISTINCT FUNCTIONS
FOR THE MODERN VEHICLE BATTERY.
1. The power to start or crank the engine.
2. The power to operate all the accessories that are in
addition to the engine - lights, air conditioners, radio,
power windows, etc.
STARTING POWER IS KNOWN AS COLD
CRANKING AMPS (CCA)
Many people mistakenly think that the number of plates
in a battery is the indication of the power of the battery -
ie. more plates means more power! While this can be, it’s
not always necessarily the case. A standardised system was
developed whereby a more accurate comparison between
batteries could be made. The surface area of the plates
exposed to the battery acid is what determines the
potential power. Meaning, less plates with a bigger area
may provide more power than more plates with smaller
surface area. That’s why CCA’s has been adopted as the
only true comparison of starting power between batteries.
ACCESSORIES POWER
The measure commonly used for expressing the capacity
of a battery to provide power for accessories is Reserve
Capacity. The Amp Hour Capacity is a measurement of
the amps a battery can deliver continuously over 20 hours.
This rating applies only to Deep Cycle batteries.
Technical definitions of CCA’s, Amp hours and Reserve
Capacity appear below.
PERFORMANCE AND TECHNOLOGY
1. COLD CRANKING AMPS (CCA) is a measure of the
engine cranking capability of a battery.
CCA is the current in amperes that a new, fully charged
battery (at -18º C) can deliver for 30 seconds and
maintain a terminal voltage (under load) of 1.2 volts
per cell or more, (7.2 volts for a 12 volt battery).
2. RESERVE CAPACITY (minutes) represents the time a
battery can supply the electrical load of a vehicle in the
event of a failure of the charging system.
Reserve Capacity is the time in minutes that a new, fully
charged battery at 25º C will deliver 25 amperes down
to a terminal voltage (under load) of 1.75 volts per cell
(10.5 volts for a 12 volt battery)
