TheAdvancedEncryptionStandard(AES)featureprovidesamethodforsecuringthedatatraffic
travelingacrosstheradiolinkbyencryptingtheinformation.TheAESfeatureandtheassociated
proceduresinthissectiononlyapplytoBridgeWaveproductsthatincludethe“AES”designator
inthemodelnumber.E xample:AR80XAES
Incryptography,AESisablockcipheradoptedasanencryptionstandardbytheU.S.
government.AESisoneofthemostpopularalgorithmsusedinsymmetrickeycryptography.
ThedesignandstrengthofallkeylengthsoftheAESalgorithm(i.e.,128,192and256)are
sufficienttoprotectclassifiedinformationuptotheSECRETlevel.TOPSECRETinformation
requiresuseofeitherthe192or256keylengths.TheBridgeWaveAESsolutionusesthe256
keylength.
Forthe256Key,64,4bitHEXcharactersor32,8bitASCIIkeyboardtextcharactersareused
forthekey.
AESproductmodelsalsosupportSecureSocketLayer(SSL)connectionsforenhancedsecurity
whenaccessingthewebmanagementinterface.TheSSLfeaturerequiresthe“https://”
designationbeplacedinfrontoftheunitsIPaddresswhentryingtoaccessthewebmanagement
interface.
BydefaulttheAEScapableunitsareshippedwithAESencryptionenabled,withamatchingkey
activeonbothendsofthelink.Whenencryptionisenabledthekeymustbeidentically
configuredoneachunitforconnectivity acrossthelinktobeestablished.
TheLinkQualityvoltagereading,whichisusedtodeterminetheperformanceofthelink,is
fullyfunctionalindependentofAESconfiguration.
