Administrator Guide

configuration information.
To recover from a system failure, you must complete the following tasks:
Reinstall the operating system using the Reinstallation CD
Configure the system using the System Setup program
Restore the system-state backup (see "Restoring System State Data" in "Backing Up the System" for more
information)
Reinstalling the Operating System
NOTICE: Using the Reinstallation CD will cause you to lose any data on the operating system drive.
1. Insert the Reinstallation CD into the CD drive.
2. Shut down the NAS system.
3. If one or both existing operating-system disk drives are operational, proceed to step 4.
If both existing operating system drives (SCSI drives 0 and 1) have been replaced with new, initialized drives, you
must disconnect all the internal data drives by pulling them out of the system far enough so that they are disengaged
from the backplane. This will leave only the two new operating-system disk drives installed in the internal drive bays.
4. Turn on the NAS system.
The Reinstallation CD automatically starts the reinstallation process if the first logical volume configured on the RAID
controller is a drive that is part of a two-drive, RAID 1 group.
It takes approximately 30 minutes for the reinstallation to complete.
NOTE: The CD automatically ejects several minutes after reinstallation begins. Even though the CD is no longer
in the CD drive, the reinstallation is still in progress.
5. If you disconnected data drives in step 3, after the reinstallation CD ejects, reinsert all data drives. Otherwise, proceed
to step 6.
6. Use a client's Web browser to connect to the NAS system.
7. Use the Dell OpenManageâ„¢ Array Manager to merge into the system any data containers that were previously defined.
See the "Merging Foreign Disks" section in "Advanced Disk and Volume Management" for more information about merging
disks.
Restoring System State Data
NOTE: To restore your system state, you must have previously backed up your system using the System State Backup
Tool on the Advanced Administration Menu or using Windows 2000 Backup and Recovery Tools.
To use the NAS Manager to restore system state data, perform the following steps:
1. Log in to the NAS Manager.
2. Click Maintenance.
3. Click Backup.
4. Log on to the system as administrator.
