Chapter 8 Library Managed Encryption
Dell PowerVault ML6000 User’s Guide 147
The Dell PowerVault ML6000 supports the Dell Encryption Key Manager
(EKM). The Dell EKM is a Java software program that generates, protects,
stores, and manages encryption keys. These keys are used by LTO-4,
LTO-5, and LTO-6 Fibre Channel and SAS tape drives to encrypt
information being written to, and decrypt information being read from,
tape media. EKM is installed on a server or servers. The library is
configured to communicate with these server(s). The encryption keys
pass through the library, so that encryption is “transparent” to the
applications.
When you purchase library managed encryption, you receive the Dell
EKM software application along with installation and configuration
instructions.
This chapter describes how to configure your encryption key
management (EKM) solution on the library. This chapter also describes
all of the EKM functions available on the library.
Refer to the Dell Encryption Key Manager Deployment Guide for information
on how to manage the Dell EKM outside of the library.
Note: The Dell™ Encryption Key Manager 3.0 Deployment Guide will be
used to support the Encryption Key Manager (EKM) 3.0
application shipped with the license key certificate and should
be referred to instead of the current EKM documentation
references on the license key certificate in this kit or the Dell™
PowerVault™ ML6000 Tape Library User’s Guide. The
deployment guide is posted under Manuals > Software > Key
Management at
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/SOFTWARE/ekm.
Note: These three solutions are not interoperable. The Scalar i500
library does not support more than one encryption key
management system on a single library.
