Chapter 11 Updating Library and Tape Drive Firmware
Upgrading Tape Drive Firmware
Dell PowerVault ML6000 User’s Guide 205
You can find step-by-step instructions for FUP tape operations in your
library’s online Help. To access the online Help system, click the Help icon
at the top right of the Web client or operator panel user interface.
The paths to open the appropriate screens are as follows:
From the operator panel, select Tools > Drive Mgmt.
From the Web client, select Tools > Drive Operations.
Erasing a FUP Tape 11
When the tape drive firmware version on a FUP tape is no longer needed,
it can be erased and the tape can be reused as a data cartridge.
Use this operation only when you need to reuse a FUP tape as a data
cartridge. It is not necessary to erase a FUP before updating it with new
tape drive firmware. In addition, this operation should not be used to
erase information on data cartridges.
The entire process of erasing a FUP tape can be performed using the
operator panel. If you choose to create the tape using the Web client, be
aware that part of the process must be performed on the operator panel
and that you will need access to the physical library.
Details on erasing FUP tapes include:
The tape drive and associated partition are automatically taken
offline during the operation and brought back online when the
operation completes. You will be asked to confirm that you want to
take the tape drive and partition offline.
You can select only empty tape drives to perform this operation. If
the tape drive you want to use contains a tape cartridge, you will
need to unload it first.
Caution: Any data on the scratch tape will be overwritten when you
create the FUP tape.
Note: If the operation does not complete successfully, the
partition remains offline until you turn it back online
manually or restart the library (see Taking a Partition
Online or Offline on page 78).
