THE TRUE COST OF TRADITIONAL
STANDBY GENERATORS
EXPENSIVE TO BUY, INSTALL, AND MAINTAIN
The price of owning a standby generator is staggering –they start from $3000 for a 10,000-watt unit, and
go upwards of $10,000 for higher end models. But it’s not the generator itself that’s expensive: Installation
costs can range from 50% to double the price of a the generator (more if your home needs electrical
upgrades), and you’ll also spend on landscaping. Standby generators also require a lot of upkeep,
which means hiring a professional each time for maintenance.
ONE PURPOSE, ONE WAY TO POWER
For such a costly piece of equipment, a standby generator can only serve one purpose.
You’ll need to hire an electrician to wire it to your home’s electrical panel via a transfer
switch. You’re locked into the power configuration you choose during installation.
If you change your mind, you’ll have to pay an electrician to rewire the circuits.
A PERMANENT FIXTURE
Once you get your standby generator installed, it’s a permanent fixture
on your property, taking up precious real estate. When life changes,
this generator stays put. It’s a big investment that you’ll have to
leave behind when you move. This is not an ideal option if you rent
or lease.
