Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Engine smokes
Inspect oil level and adjust as needed.
Verify machine is not on a steep incline.
Air filter may be dirty. Replace as necessary.
Inspect cooling fins. Clean if necessary.

Traction drive does not
engage
Inspect drive belt. Replace if broken. Repair if out of adjustment.
Adjust traction drive cable
Difficulty shifting
If shifting on a slope or under load, lift one tire to relieve residual drive load.
Excessively tight shift cables. Loosen one cable slightly. Test for improvement.
Belt frays or rolls over the pul-
ley
Pulley dirty or damaged. Clean pulley with steel wool or file off any cuts or nicks.
Inspect belt for stretching, wear or hard spots.
Excessive vibration when
engaging mower blade
Inspect mower blade for damage or wear. Replace or sharpen. Never try to straighten
a bent blade. Verify blade is properly orientated. See
Replacing Mower Blade
.
Mower blade entangled in debris. Remove debris.
Mower blade not properly seated on hub. Loosen mower blade nut, reseat the
mower blade, and tighten nut.
Inspect and tighten all fasteners as required.
Mower blade is not cutting, or
is loose
Mower blade not properly seated on hub. Loosen mower blade nut, reseat
mower blade, and tighten nut.
Mower blade dull. Sharpen blade. Verify blade is properly orientated. See
Replacing Mower Blade.
Mower blade will not engage
and/or disengage
Verify operator presence lever is activated.
Verify control panel plugs and electric clutch plugs are connected.
Wheels pulling left or right Verify tire pressure is correct.
Poor brake performance
Verify all cables are adjusted properly and cables are not kinked.
Caliper not be adjusted properly. See Adjusting Caliper Alignment.
Pads and rotors not aligned properly.
Pads and rotors not burnished properly. See Adjusting Brake Pads.
Levers hard to move during
cold weather operation
Cable housing is freezing. Using a lubricating syringe, inject a fuel additive into
cable-housing opening to absorb moisture. Tip the machine forward slightly so
the additive will flow down into the housing. Afterwards, lubricate with SAE30 oil.
