ThecorrosionbehavioroftheX-BTfastenerwasassessedbyMPAStuttgart
in2009.Basedontheseinvestigations,MPAStuttgartassessedthecorrosion
behaviorofthestainlesssteelS-BTfasteners.
TheMPAreportevaluatesandassessestheS-BTstainlessstudsintermsofthe
followingcorrosiontopics:
•Evaluationandassessmentofatmosphericcorrosion
–Pittingorcrevicecorrosion
–Stresscorrosioncracking
–Bimetalliccorrosion
• Corrosion resistance of stainless steels on the basis of their composition
•Long-termexposuretestsinmaritimeatmospheres

Test results
•Onthebasisoftheinvestigationsmentionedabove,MPAStuttgartassumed
thatthestainlessS-BTstudshaveverygoodresistancetocorrosion,evenin
atmospherescontainingchloridesandarecomparabletothatoftheX-BT.
•TestsatMPAStuttgartconrmedhighresistancetopittingorcrevicecorrosion.
•TestscarriedoutattheUniversityofLeobenshowedthatthematerialalsohas
goodresistancetostresscorrosioncrackingeveninhighlyaggressivemedia.
Conclusions
HiltiS-BTstainlessfastenersmadefromstainlesssteelofferexcellentcorrosion
resistanceinatmospherescontainingchlorideions,i. e.coastalareasandareas
nearroadstreatedwithde-icingsalts.
BasedontheexaminationsfromMPAStuttgart,theestimatedlifetimeintypical
atmospheres,fromacorrosion-specicpointofview,isatleast40years.
