Message attachments named ATTxxxxx
Lotus Notes and Domino store the name of every file at tachment twic e in the NSF representation of a
messa ge. The visible name, which users see displayed, is stored as part of the composite data (CD)
records holding the rich text message body . A second copy of the name is stored in a $File item.
In most cases, these names are identical, but occasionally Domino creates a unique name (beginning
with the letters ATT) for use in the $Fi le item. This happens when two files with the same name are
attached to the same message; it may also occur in other circumstances. The Domino router on the HP
gateway server always uses the filename in the $File item when it converts a message for the IAP but, in
caseslikethis,itresultsinlossoftheoriginalfilename.
To prevent this situation from occurring, messages with ATT attachments are submitted to the EAs
prep rocessing database for encapsulation. This preser ves the orig inal filename intact.
To open a message with an ATT attachment, follow the steps in
Opening encapsulated messages”onpage124.
