HP 3PAR X9000 File Serving Software (IBRIX) Implementation Guide (QL226-96987, June 2013)

Using Dynamic Optimization
HP 3PAR Dynamic Optimization Software is an optional feature that allows you to improve the
performance of virtual volumes dynamically. With Dynamic Optimization, you can perform the
following tasks:
Change the RAID type of a virtual volume. For example, you can convert a RAID 1 volume to
a RAID 5 volume.
Change the device type. For example, you can change from FC drives to NL drives.
Change the volume type. For example, you can convert from FPVVs to TPVVs
The Dynamic Optimization feature also analyzes your entire system and automatically corrects
space usage imbalances in the system. Virtual-volume capacity and physical-disk capacity are
analyzed and rebalanced for optimal performance.
NOTE: To use the HP 3PAR Dynamic Optimization feature, you must purchase an HP 3PAR
Dynamic Optimization license.
The Dynamic Optimization automated tuning process operates in three phases:
internode tuning phase Analyzes the system and detects virtual volumes which are not
correctly balanced between nodes.
If virtual volumes are not balanced correctly, the volumes are
tuned to correct the imbalance. This is the internode tuning
phase.
Intranode tuning phase Analyzes the system and detects any chunklet imbalance
between physical disks associated with the same node. After
the analysis, chunklets are moved from overused physical disks
to under–used physical disks associated with the same node.
Final tuning phase Analyze the system and verify that logical disks associated with
a CPG have the same characteristics as the CPG. If the logical
disk characteristics do not match the CPG, the logical disk is
modified to match the CPG characteristics.
The tunevv command is used in the HP 3PAR OS CLI to change the virtual volume parameters.
You can also change the virtual volume parameters using the HP 3PAR Management Console. The
following figures show the procedure for tuning the virtual volume parameters using the HP 3PAR
Management Console.
