HP 3PAR Recovery Manager 4.5.0 for Oracle on Solaris, Red Hat Linux, and Oracle Enterprise Linux User's Guide (QL226-97705, May 2014)

A Case Study: Remote Copy with Recovery Manager for
Oracle
Introduction
HP 3PAR Recover Manager Software for Oracle provides a utility, rmora_rsync, which can be
used to support one-to-one synchronous or asynchronous periodic HP 3PAR Remote Copy
configurations or Synchronous Long Distance configurations, and provides a quick restore and
recovery for Oracle databases when failures occur. In this case study, two scenarios will be
discussed, one for recovery using the synchronous backup HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system,
one for recovery using the asynchronous periodic backup HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system. The
test configuration is a Synchronous Long Distance Remote Copy configuration, which consists of
a local storage system, a remote synchronous storage system, and a remote asynchronous periodic
backup storage system. Refer to the HP 3PAR Remote Copy Software User’s Guide for complete
information about Synchronous Long Distance Remote Copy.
Systems and Software Configurations
Subsequent sections in this appendix refer to the system and software configurations described in
this section.
In this testing environment, the database ASM11GR2 is an RAC database, and the HP 3PAR
Operating System Software version is 3.1.1. All hosts are installed with Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Server release 5.4, Oracle 11.2.1.1, and Recovery Manager 4.3 Software for Oracle. If a different
configuration is used, such as Sun Solaris OS, Oracle 11gR1, etc., a similar procedure can be
applied.
Three Remote Copy groups are created on the local HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system and the
remote synchronous storage system. One group contains datafile volumes, one contains archive
log destination volumes, and one contains redo log files and control file volumes. There are two
Remote Copy groups on the remote asynchronous periodic storage system, which contain datafile
volumes and archive log destination volumes, respectively.
