3PAR InForm OS Concepts Guide InForm OS Version 2.2.4
6.1 Overview
InServ Storage Servers automatically detect new physically connected host paths and display
their WWNs (World Wide Names) (for Fibre Channel ports) or iSCSI Names (for iSCSI ports) in
the InForm CLI and the InForm Management Console. However, you can also add new WWNs
or iSCSI Names for unestablished host paths and assign them to a host before they are
physically connected. This allows a "plug-and-play" functionality that avoids the need for
manual reconfiguration after establishing new host paths. For additional information on how
the storage server sees hosts and instructions on relocating a host from one storage server port
to another, see Appendix B, Servicing Hardware and Moving Hosts.
From the storage system’s point of view, a host is a set of initiator port WWNs or iSCSI Names.
These WWNs or iSCSI Names need not be associated with target ports on the controller nodes.
In addition, this set of WWNs or iSCSI Names may also be an empty set, meaning that no actual
WWNs or iSCSI Names have been assigned to the host yet.
A virtual volume can be exported (made accessible) to one or more hosts. The host sees the
exported volume as a LUN connected to one or more ports. Once the virtual volume is
exported to a host, the host can send requests to the LUN.
6.2 Creating, Editing, and Removing Hosts
The InForm administration tools allow for creating, editing, and removing Fibre Channel and
iSCSI host paths and their properties.
When creating a new host, you can either create a host with or without assigning WWNs or
iSCSI Names. A virtual volume that is exported to a host is exported to all the WWNs that make
up the host. If you need to export virtual volumes to particular host computer WWNs or iSCSI
Names, create separate hosts on the storage server and assign each WWN or iSCSI Name to its
own host. For instructions on creating and modifying hosts, see the InForm OS CLI
Administrator’s Manual and InForm OS Management Console Online Help.
NOTE: Refer to the InForm OS CLI Administrator’s Manual and InForm OS
Management Console Online Help for information on exporting virtual volumes.
