8.7.6 Commonly Provisioned Virtual Volumes
Another variation on the standard base volume, Commonly Provisioned Virtual Volumes
(CPVVs) can also draw resources from a Common Provisioning Group (CPG). CPVVs have a set
amount of user space that is allocated up front for user data, and only allocate snapshot data
space and snapshot administration space on demand. Therefore, a CPVV is no different from a
standard base volume until it is used to create snapshots, which requires a 3PAR Virtual Copy
license.
There are two types of CPVVs:
A CPVV that draws its user space from logical disks that were created during the creation of
the base volume and draws its snapshot space from a CPG is referred to as a CPVV with
static user space. The CPG used for snapshot space is dynamic and grows on demand.
A CPVV that draws its user space from logical disks belonging to a CPG and draws its
snapshot space from a CPG is referred to as a CPVV with fully provisioned user space. The
CPG that is used for user space differs from the CPG used for snapshot space, in that the
user space is fully provisioned and does not grow.
To learn about CPGs, see Chapter 10, Common Provisioning Groups. For instructions on
creating CPGs and CPVVs, refer to the InForm OS CLI Administrator’s Manual or the InForm OS
Management Console Online Help.
