HP 3PAR Management Console 4.5.1 Software User Guide

Part V Migrating Data
This section contains information on migrating data using the HP 3PAR Peer Motion feature.
The HP 3PAR Peer Motion feature controls the migration of data from a source system to a destination system.
You can copy the virtual volumes and system configuration information to a new system without changing
host configurations or interrupting access to the volumes. Any available free port can be used for Peer
Motion.
There are three types of migration: online migration, minimally disruptive migration, and offline migration:
Online Migration Used to migrate virtual volumes that are exported to a host and Windows clusters
using NPIV ports. Online migration supports the migration of all volumes, a subset of volumes, or a
single virtual volume. Migrating a single volume or a subset of volumes is called Single Virtual Volume
Migration. With Single Virtual Volume Migration, the host and source systems remain zoned. Migrating
all volumes requires unzoning the host system from the source system.
Minimally Disruptive Used to migrate virtual volumes that are exported to a host. This migration type
requires shutting down the host system for a short period of time. The destination system must be running
OS version 3.1.2 or later.
Offline Migration Used to migrate virtual volumes that are not exported to a host. Exported volumes
that you want to migrate must first be unexported to use offline migration. No unzoning or system
shutdown is required.
After data migration is complete, the source system can be disconnected from the hosts and repurposed.
