HP Application Recovery Manager software A.06.10 Concepts guide (March 2008)

control the disk array(s) and the Application Recovery Manager Oracle and SAP
integrations interact with the database applications.
On Microsoft Windows, a new unified backup and restore interface the Volume
Shadow Copy Service (VSS) coordinates the actors in the backup process. The
VSS model provides a standardized interface to the applications (writers) and disk
arrays (providers).
The writers interact with the applications, providing a list of items that can be backed
up. Data integrity is provided on the operating system and application level, by
writers.
The hardware providers replace the disk array agent functionality and behave from
the Application Recovery Manager point of view similar as a disk array agent.
When performing an instant recovery from a VSS backup session, you can select to
use the VSS or disk array agent instant recovery functionality. This can also depend
on the way the backup was made.
For detailed instructions on how to use the Application Recovery Manager with the
VSS integration, see the VSS chapter of the HP Application Recovery Manager
software integration guide.
