HP StorageWorks P9000 Command View Advanced Edition Suite Software 7.1 CLI Reference Guide (TB581-96051, May 2011)

If external volumes are used for a pool for Smart Tiers, the cache mode for the volumes must be
ON.
If both internal and external volumes are used for a THP pool, the cache mode for the external
volumes must be ON.
However, if a THP pool was created when the microcode version was earlier than 70-02-00-XX/XX,
the THP pool cannot contain both internal and external volumes, even if the microprogram is up-
graded to 70-02-00-XX/XX or later.
If more than one logical unit is specified for a THP pool, up to three types of logical units with
different drive types or rotational speeds can be used.
#
However, logical units with the same drive type and rotational speed must also have the same
RAID level.
If more than one logical unit is specified for a THP pool, RAID 1 cannot be mixed together with
other RAID levels.
#
The specifiable drive types are SSD, SAS, and SATA. Only SAS drives are distinguished by the
rotational speed.
Only one type of external volume is allowed, regardless of the drive type and rotational speed
of the actual volumes.
The following conditions apply only to XP24000/XP20000:
If more than one logical unit is specified, internal volumes and external volumes cannot be mixed
together.
If more than one internal volume is specified, all of them must have the same drive type.
For external volumes, HP does not recommend that you use logical units with different drive types
for a pool for Thin Provisioning Software.
If more than one logical unit is specified, all of their drives must have the same rotational speed.
NOTE:
For details about the number of pool volumes that can be specified in a THP pool, see the Thin
Provisioning documentation.
For details about the total maximum number of THP pools, see the Thin Provisioning documentation.
