About command devices
A command device is necessary in order for P9000 RAID Manager (a prerequisite product for
Replication Manager) to communicate with storage systems. Replication Manager allows you to set
up command devices in open systems if the storage system type is XP12000/XP10000/SVS200, or
XP24000/XP20000.

Storage system types and volume requirements (command devices)
Volumes that meet the requirements listed here are displayed as candidate volumes in Replication
Manager.
Storage system types and requirements for using volumes as command devices

Requirement
YYVolume not a paired volume
YYVolume not an external volume
YYVolume not a virtual volume
YYVolume access attribute must be Read or Write
YYVolume not reserved for Auto LUN

Command device settings for virtual machines
The Replication Manager command device configuration function cannot be used to set a volume as
a command device if the volume has been allocated for a VMware virtual machine.
To set a command device for the virtual machine:
1. Use Remote Web Console to set the volume as a command device.
2. Use Remote Web Console to add the command device in (1) to a VMware host group and set
a path for the command device.
3. Perform VMware Raw Device Mapping, and then make sure that the command device in (1) is
recognized by the virtual machine.
