HP StorageWorks XP Provisioning Manager User Guide (December 2005)

Working With OS-Based Constraints 72
You must install the Device Manager agent on a host managed by Provisioning Manager. If the Device
Manager agent is not installed, the values for some items may not be displayed. If the Provisioning
Manager support functionality for the Device Manager agent is not installed, the values for some items
may not be displayed.
Version of VERITAS™ File System
Provisioning Manager supports VERITAS™ File System 3.5. When you are using HP-UX 11i v1, the
standard file system is VERITAS™ File System 3.3. To enable VERITAS™ File System 3.5, first install a
version of Software Pack (Optional HP-UX 11i v1 Core Enhancements) that was released in or after
December 2002. When you are using HP-UX 11i v2, the standard file system is VERITAS™ File System
3.5.
4-6-2 Restrictions on Expansion and Deletion
Limits on expanding and deleting a logical volume
Provisioning Manager cannot expand or delete the following logical volumes:
A logical volume of a volume group other than a Logical Volume Manager volume group
A logical volume whose component contains partitions(Note that partitions can be created in HP-UX 11i
v2 (IPF) only.)
Prerequisites When the Host in Use Has Not Recognized any Logical Unit
When adding a device file, or adding or expanding a file system for a host that is not recognizing any LUs, use
Device Manager to register the port WWN of the HBA for the host in advance. If no WWN is registered, no
volume will become selectable in the wizard step for selecting a volume, and you will be unable to continue
operation.
4-6-3 Restrictions on Related Products
Cluster software
When you use the host management functionality to add, expand, or delete a file system, or add or delete a
device file, Provisioning Manager does not perform configuration of the cluster software. You must manually
configure the cluster software. Cluster software that can use the file systems and device files created by the
host management functionality is Serviceguard.
Software that cannot be used with Provisioning Manager
Provisioning Manager does not support an environment in which a mirror volume exists or can exist. Therefore,
if MirrorDisk/UX has been installed on the host, you cannot use the Provisioning Manager functionality to
reference or set host information.
4-6-4 About Host Management in HP-UX Environments
This subsection provides important information about using Provisioning Manager to manipulate file systems
and device files.
4-6-4-1 Notes on Installing a Storage Subsystem
Make sure that you specify a unique port address for each port of storage devices in the same zone. If the
same port addresses exist in the same zone, the OS cannot recognize the ports and may not recognize the
device files. In such a state, if you add a device file, add a file system, or expand a file system from
Provisioning Manager, the device file cannot be recognized and an error occurs.
4-6-4-2 Notes on Displaying Host Information
For an LU managed by a path manager other than PV-link, Provisioning Manager cannot display information
(such as the number of paths and data paths) managed by the path manager, and cannot be used to specify
settings for the managed LUs.
4-6-4-3 Notes on Adding File Systems
In the following cases, the file system is not added:
The volume manager used in the file system is other than Logical Volume Manager
The file system in use by the host is other than VERITAS File System
The specified mount point is already in use by another file system
The file system contains partitions
Volumes that satisfy one of the following conditions cannot be used for file system addition:
