HP Insight Management 7.3 Installation and Configuration Guide

Obtaining more information about using HP SIM
If at any time you need more information about how to use HP SIM tools and features, how to
complete a discovery, set credentials, or make protocol settings, click the Help icon (?) in the upper
right corner of the screen.
You can also find more information in the HP Systems Insight Manager user documentation at:

The Discovery process
The first steps to finishing your installation consist of creating and running discovery tasks. Discovery
is the process of finding servers and other hardware devices in the HP SIM management domain
so you can manage them from the CMS. To discover server and hardware devices, you must define
and set up tasks to discover the devices, supplying the appropriate credentials for the discovery
process to access and discover them, and then run the discovery tasks.
NOTE: A single CMS can manage multiple VM hosts. Also, more than one CMS can manage
the same VM host. However, HP recommends that you manage one VM host with one CMS at a
time.
Step 1: Defining discovery tasks
For best results, HP recommends creating the following discovery tasks, and running them
sequentially in the suggested order. You may want to create multiple tasks for certain types, such
as servers, grouping them so that systems with the same credentials are in the same discovery
tasks, with up to three sets of credentials supplied in each discovery task. This reduces the chance
of account lockout when an invalid credential is tried too many times.
Table 11 Discovery tasks
DescriptionTaskOrder
Discovers Systems Insight Manager CMS and its management processor
(if the CMS has a management processor).
Central Management Server
(CMS)
1
Discovers the Onboard Administrator for every enclosure to be managed.
When specifying credentials for this task, you must also include the
Onboard Administrator2
management processor (iLO) credentials for every blade in the enclosures
associated with the Onboard Administrators.
Discovers all management processors not discovered in the previous tasks.
This includes iLOs and management processors for all non-blade systems.
Management Processors3
Discovers physical servers (blades, standalones). You must run onboard
administrator and management processor discovery tasks before running
this one.
Physical Servers4
Discovers virtual machines associated with servers discovered in the
physical servers discovery task.
Virtual Machines5
HP recommends that you create multiple discovery tasks to simplify troubleshooting if you encounter
errors. However, if you have a small network, an alternate way of setting up your discovery tasks
is to create a single task with one IP address range and all of the required credentials for the
systems in that range.
To define a discovery task:
1. If you are not already at the Discovery page, use one of the following methods to navigate
there:
In the Finish the Installation area on the HP Systems Insight Manager home page, click
Configure discovery and credentials.
From the HP Systems Insight Manager GUI, select OptionsDiscovery menu.
