HP Insight Management 7.3 Installation and Configuration Guide

If there is a concern about knowing the right ports, you can partition the VSA and non-VSA ports
across separate fabrics. For example, a fabric named Fabric_UX can contain all ports with VSA
enabled, while another fabric Fabric_Win can contain the ports with VSA disabled. When defining
the storage pool entry, you can choose the suitable fabric. If Matrix is auto-generating the storage
pool entries, it will not know which fabric to choose to ensure that HP-UX uses Fabric_UX. You can
configure matrix with a prioritized list of fabrics to use when auto-generating storage pool entries.
It is recommended to favor the most common configuration, such as use Fabric_UX for majority of
the HP-UX requests and Fabric_Win for majority of the requests that are not for HP-UX. This allows
auto-generation of storage pool entries to work well for the majority of the cases. For the minority
of requests, auto-generation of storage pool entries does not work. The technique described in this
section about storage tags at the Matrix service template and storage pool entry level (but not at
SPM level), is used to ensure that generated storage pool entries are not fulfilled via SPM using
the wrong fabric. The storage pool entries are manually created with the correct fabric chosen,
and the suitable storage tag applied after SPM has returned suitable storage candidates.
Pre-Provisioning of Volumes and Thin Pools on EMC Symmetrix VMAX
The SPM administrator must contact the EMC administrator for the following pre-provisioning steps:
Supported RAID Levels
The SPM adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX storage array looks for the existing storage pool
settings for all supported RAIDs. These storage pool settings for a given RAID are not created by
the adapter. Hence, the storage administrator must create a volume of a given RAID using EMC
native tools (SMC and SYMCLI). This ensures the creation of a new storage pool setting instance
for the requested RAID.
Creating Thin Volume
On EMC Symmetrix VMAX array, a thin volume gets created on a thin pool. A thin pool is normally
created for a specific RAID level. The SPM adapter does not create a thin pool, hence it is required
that the storage administrator creates a thin pool for a given RAID using EMC native tools (SMC
and SYMCLI).
