Preface The HP Insight Recovery 6.3 User Guide contains information on installation, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting HP Insight Recovery 6.3. Publishing history The latest publication date and part number indicate the current edition. Table 1 Publishing History Publication Date Part Number Edition Changes April 2011 5900–1543 1 This is the initial release of the HP Insight Recovery 6.
1 Overview HP Insight Recovery is the recovery management component of HP Insight Dynamics that provides disaster recovery protection for logical servers configured and managed by the HP Insight Dynamics Virtualization Manager. Logical servers that are included in an HP Insight Recovery configuration are referred to as DR Protected logical servers. A DR Protected logical server can run on a physical machine (C-class blade), or on a virtual machine hosted by a hypervisor.
Table 2 The HP Insight Recovery configuration process Step Description 1 The local and remote sites are defined in this step, including naming the sites, designating Central Management Servers (CMS) and assigning Primary Site and Recovery Site roles. 2 The local and remote Storage Management Servers are configured in this step. These servers manage Storage Replication Groups at local and remote sites respectively. 3 The Storage Replication Group information is configured in this step.
2 Installing and configuring HP Insight Recovery Installation and configuration overview The following HP Insight Recovery installation and configuration overview includes links to information on each step in the process. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Confirm that all HP Insight Recovery installation and configuration prerequisites have been met — see “Installation and configuration prerequisites” (page 8) for more information.
Networking setup It is assumed that networking links are present between the Primary Site and the Recovery Site. You can use HP Insight Recovery in a variety of networking configurations, but it is important that you take note of the following HP Insight Recovery networking configuration parameters: • HP Insight Recovery assumes that the Primary and Recovery Sites operate in a mode with workloads running simultaneously at both sites, but with DR Protected workloads running at the Primary Site only.
CMS, exclude addresses from 00-21-5A-9B-00-00 to 00-21-5A-9B-FF-FF, and on the Recovery Site CMS exclude addresses from 00-21-5A-9C-00-00 to 00-21-5A-9C-FF-FF. Storage setup HP Insight Recovery depends on storage array replication, for example Continuous Access EVA Disaster Recovery Groups, to enable failover of logical servers. It is assumed that storage replication links are present between the Primary Site and the Recovery Site.
NOTE: For information on storage setup of cross technology logical servers (logical servers capable of being VC hosted or VM hosted), refer to Dynamic workload movement with BladeSystem Matrix: Fluid movement between physical and virtual resources for flexibility and cost-effective recovery available at: http:// www.hp.com/go/insightrecovery NOTE: For a list of supported storage, refer to the HP Insight Software 6.3 Support Matrix available at: http://www.hp.
NOTE: You cannot change the datastore of a VM hosted logical server while it is being managed by Insight Recovery. To change the datastore, first remove the VM hosted logical server from the HP Insight Recovery configuration, then use the Logical Servers Activate operation in the Tools menu of the Visualization tab to change the datastore.
NOTE: Do not activate the recovery logical servers at this time. During the HP Insight Recovery configuration process, the recovery logical servers will be further configured in the configuration import process at the Recovery Site - there will be an opportunity to activate and deactivate the recovery logical servers at this time.
• Recovery Groups Create or import Recovery Groups, edit or delete existing Recovery Groups, view Recovery Group configuration details. • Jobs Monitor Job progress, cancel Jobs in progress, delete completed Jobs, view Job and Sub Job details. The HP Insight Recovery online help system and tooltips provide answers to questions you may have while using the graphical user interface.
3 Testing and failover operations This chapter contains sections on testing Recovery Groups, planned failovers and unplanned failovers using the Change local site to Primary Site and Change local site to Recovery Site operations.
Failover operations This section explains the difference between planned and unplanned failovers, and provides the procedure to follow in either case. Planned failover A planned failover typically involves an expected outage at the Primary Site. For example, a planned failover might be necessary to perform scheduled maintenance, or to react to a severe weather forecast. It can also be used for testing purposes.
assigned to DR Protected logical servers so that they do not automatically power up after an outage. If, for example, the Primary Site loses power and site failover is invoked, the original Primary Site will not resume running the DR Protected logical servers when power is restored. The managed nodes (whether VC blades or virtual machines) assigned to DR Protected logical servers will stay powered down until the site role is changed to Recovery (and resources are unassigned).
4 Issues, limitations and suggested actions Issues and limitations of this release are listed below. The following categories are used: Limitations Limitations of the implemented functions and features of this release. Major issues Issues that may significantly affect functionality and usability in this release. Minor issues Issues that may be noticeable but do not have a significant impact on functionality or usability.
Identical configuration of logical servers between sites Primary and recovery logical servers must be configured with identical parameters, except for the logical server name, using the Virtualization Manager. There is a potential for discrepancies, between the Primary Site and the Recovery Site, in the values of attributes that are not included in the HP Insight Recovery user interface configuration screens.
Suggested actions: There is no workaround for this issue. Site delete operation in HP Insight Recovery does not remove SIM tools If Continuous Access XP Storage Management Servers are configured and if a site delete operation is performed, the SIM tools used to manage XP storage replication on the local Storage Management Server will not be deleted. Suggested actions: The mxtool command can be run manually to remove the SIM tools.
5 Troubleshooting This chapter is divided into three sections: • “Configuration troubleshooting” (page 21) • “HP Insight Recovery troubleshooting” (page 25) • “HP Insight Recovery log files” (page 28) Configuration troubleshooting To troubleshoot HP Insight Recovery configuration operations, take note of any on-screen error messages, then review this section for relevant information. You can also view the mxdomainmgr log files for additional information.
• ◦ The Storage Replication Group is not configured to be managed by the RAID manager instances. ◦ The RAID manager service is not running on the local Storage Management Server. ◦ The parameters entered for the Storage Replication Group (local array, remote array, serial number, and replication mode) do not match the Storage Replication Group information on the disk array.
Error message Cannot create/edit the site information. Cause The hostname specified for the CMS does not include a fully qualified domain name associated with the local CMS. Action Ensure that the CMS for the local site has the fully qualified domain of the local host. Error message Storage Management Server not discovered by CMS. Discover server and retry.
Error message Unable to add/edit EVA Storage Replication Group Cause Unable to obtain information about the Storage Replication Group from the Command View EVA Storage Management Server. Action Confirm that the Storage Replication Group exists on the arrays that were listed when the EVA Storage Replication Group configuration was added or edited in HP Insight Recovery. Ensure that the EVA arrays are managed by Command View EVA Storage Management Servers. 1.
Error message Unable to import Storage Management Servers. Cause A Storage Management Server is not properly configured in the Insight Dynamics user interface. Action Ensure that the Storage Management Server is discovered in the Insight Dynamics user interface. Ensure that Open SSH is installed and configured on the Storage Management Server. If not, run Configure -> Configure or Repair Agents from the Insight Dynamics user interface.
NOTE: The corresponding Job to change the original Primary Site to become the Recovery Site is initiated by clicking on the Change local site to Recovery Site button. NOTE: The role of a site in HP Insight Recovery is not changed until a site Job has completed. For a failed Job, click on the associated Job Id to get detailed information about the associated Sub Jobs. A Site Job contains a Sub Job for each Recovery Group.
Troubleshooting Guide available at: http://h20000.www2.hp.com - use the Business Support Center search function to locate this document. Once the problem has been corrected, return to HP Insight Recovery. If the correction included reconfiguration of logical server(s), go to the Recovery Groups tab and delete the Recovery Group(s) that contain the re-configured logical server(s). Now go to the Sites tab and re-initiate the failed Change local site to... operation.
• Insight Recovery job failed because of unlocatable logical server in LSM. Possible causes include: ◦ • A logical server managed by HP Insight Recovery was removed from LSM, before it was unmanaged in HP Insight Recovery.
