HP Insight Recovery 6.3 User Guide

1 Overview
HP Insight Recovery is the recovery management component of HP Insight Dynamics that provides
disaster recovery protection for logical servers configured and managed by the HP Insight Dynamics
Virtualization Manager. Logical servers that are included in an HP Insight Recovery configuration
are referred to as DR Protected logical servers. A DR Protected logical server can run on a physical
machine (C-class blade), or on a virtual machine hosted by a hypervisor. When a DR Protected
logical server is running on a C-class Blade equipped with HP Virtual Connect, it is referred to as
a VC hosted logical server. When a DR Protected logical server is running on a virtual machine
under the control of a hypervisor, it is referred to as a VM hosted logical server.
An HP Insight Recovery configuration consists of two sites, each managed by HP Insight Dynamics.
At any point in time, one site is configured with the Primary role and the other is configured with
the Recovery role. HP Insight Recovery pairs symmetrically configured logical servers across the
two sites. The DR Protected logical servers at the Primary Site are in an activated state, providing
services to the end-user. The peer logical servers at the Recovery Site are in a deactivated state.
At the Primary Site, the boot images of the DR Protected logical servers, including applications
code and data, reside on disk array volumes. The Primary Site volumes are replicated at the
Recovery Site using storage array supported replication. The replicated volumes at the Recovery
Site are associated with DR Protected peer logical servers at the Recovery Site.
If a disaster occurs at the Primary site, the administrator at the Recovery site can trigger a site
failover via a push-button provided by HP Insight Recovery. This will prepare the storage associated
with the DR Protected logical servers at the Recovery site for read-write access, and then activate
the logical servers at the Recovery site. The site role at the Recovery Site will be changed to Primary
after a failover.
Some features of HP Insight Recovery 6.3
Provides an automated disaster recovery mechanism, with a single push-button triggering both
storage and server failover for DR Protected logical servers.
Provides a disaster recovery solution for logical servers managed by HP Insight Dynamics.
Supports hypervisor hosted virtual machines.
Supports standalone HyperV.
Supports Microsoft Windows Server 2008 with HyperV R2 in a clustered configuration with
cluster shared volumes (CSV).
Supports flexible cross-technology logical servers - VC hosted logical servers can fail over to
ESX hosted VMs and ESX hosted VMs can fail over to VC hosts.
Supports multiple logical servers in a Recovery Group.
Extends the HP Insight Dynamics value of a common management interface to the realm of
disaster recovery, for logical servers running on physical or virtual machines.
Supports HP StorageWorks Continuous Access EVA storage replication in synchronous and
asynchronous mode.
Supports HP StorageWorks Continuous Access XP storage replication in synchronous,
asynchronous, and asynchronous journal mode.
