HP Storage Provisioning Manager (SPM) Version 1.2 User Guide

logical unit
number
A LUN is an address used in the SCSI protocol to access an array within a target.
In the case of SPM, a LUN refers to a volume that has been presented to one or
more initiators. SPM also supports unpresented volumes which have been created
but do not have LUNs.
RAID A Redundant Array of Independent Disks is a RAID. A RAID volume consists of
more than one drive, but appears to the operating system to be a single logical
disk. RAID improves performance by disk striping, which involves partitioning
each drive's storage space into units. By placing data on multiple disks, I/O
operations can overlap in a balanced way, improving performance.
resource A storage catalog entity representing a storage resource. A resource provides
a set of services.
server In this document, a server refers to either an application server or a storage
server.
service goal Service goals are contained within a service request. Each service goal consists
of a goal type (such as, a volume service), a set of constraints (for example, size,
RAID type, tag values), and a set of configurations (including LUN masking, and
host OS mode).
service group A service group is a grouping mechanism within SPM which enables permissions
and tag properties be applied to each of the volume services within the service
group without having to specify the properties on each service individually.
service request A service request is the set of goals sent to SPM which describes the type and
amount of storage preferred. It is typically initiated by the server administrator.
small computer
systems interface
SCSI is a standard, intelligent parallel interface for attaching peripheral arrays
to computers, based on an array independent protocol.
storage catalog The repository of service requests, services, service groups, and resources
managed by SPM.
Storage
Management
SMI-S delivers open storage network management interface technology in order
to have "all storage managed by the SMI interface" as the unifying factor between

all objects that must be managed in a storage area network and the tools used
to manage them.
storage service SPM defines a storage service as space in the catalog that is available to fulfill
a goal, or is already fulfilling a goal.
storage solution SPM composes a storage solution to satisfy a set of storage requirements. The
storage solution consists of a process that may be executed to fulfill the storage
requirements in the customers environment. Steps include storage provisioning
and storage presentation sequenced with host configuration and data service
configuration actions.
storage system An entity that provides storage capacity to a server. Types of storage systems
include disk arrays, NAS appliance (storage server), and DAS. Capabilities of
storage systems vary by type and are commonly extended through licensable
data services.
system A system refers to a storage system or an application server.
