Introduction Insight Control Environment for Linux (ICE-Linux) is the next generation of Linux® based data center management products from Hewlett-Packard, replacing the older Insight Control Linux Edition (ICLE). The two products share many concepts, tools, and philosophies, but are significantly different in their underlying technologies and implementations. Both enable Linux provisioning of one or many managed systems, and provide on-going monitoring and management capabilities.

Appliance vs. Framework The single largest difference between ICLE and ICE-Linux is the basic model they are built upon. ICLE was an Appliance in that the installation process completely consumed the CMS, installing a customized Linux-based Operating System, all the required tools, and the management application itself.

Additionally, as noted above, ICE-Linux added the capability for you to register and to use your own installation configuration files (Kickstart or AutoYaST files) to gain the ultimate level of control of your servers’ installation processes. ICE-Linux provides a few macros to use in these files, to allow their integration into the installation tools that form the core of the ICE-Linux provisioning capabilities. Figure 1.

The last of the major improvements to capture and deployment is the inclusion of a new graphical partitioning wizard. When deploying a captured image, you can choose either to use the captured image’s partitioning scheme (which is also a new feature) or to use the graphical wizard, shown in Figure 2, to build a new partitioning scheme. This wizard has the capabilities to define primary, extended, and LVM-based logical volume groups. Figure 2.

• Serial console access and logging. The HP Proprietary Console Management Facility (CMF) captures serial console messages into per-system log files, which reside on the CMS, and enables direct access to a managed system's console through an interactive terminal session. • Remote power control. This enables you to reboot, power on, and power off a managed system through its management processor. • Boot to a Linux rescue mode.

Migrating Captured Images As described previously, the storage format used to capture images changed between ICLE and ICELinux and is not directly compatible. The images you have captured need to be redeployed using the ICLE tool, then recaptured using ICE-Linux. The following is a step-by-step process for completing this task. Repeat these steps for every captured image you want to preserve. 1.
