HP Insight Control Server Provisioning 7.3 Update 1 Administrator Guide

3 Managing your Media Server
The Media Server holds deployment software and is separate from the Insight Control server
provisioning appliance. OS Build Plans use the software on the Media Server to provision managed
servers. Software (media) on the Media Server can include vendor-supplied OS distribution files,
HP-provided OS distribution files, captured images, and firmware and driver updates such as HP
Service Packs for ProLiant (HP SPP). The Media Server is required because there is not enough
storage on the appliance to store everything. It extends the storage capability of the appliance.
IC server provisioning provides the Media Server setup utility, available from the UI, to help you
in creating a Media Server. The Media Server setup utility is also available in the product ZIP file
your appliance was delivered in and on the media.
The Media Server Setup utility creates all of the required folder structures, configures your file share
and http server, and copies your distribution media to the appropriate locations. Using it greatly
simplifies the setup of the media server.
The media server information in the rest of this chapter goes into detail about how the media server
works and is laid out, and also provides information about how to manually configure your own
media server without the setup utility. If you are using the media server setup utility to manage your
media server, you can skip the skip the sections on manually setting up a Media Server. However,
if you want to know more about how the media server works or if you need to troubleshoot media
server problems, you may want to continue reading.
See the HP Insight Control Server Provisioning Installation Guide for requirements and instructions
for creating a Media Server for your facility with the Media Server setup utility.

About the Media Server
By default, IC server provisioning makes use of two different protocols for all of its OS Build Plans:
The SMB (Windows file share) protocol, used for:
All Windows operating system installations
All operating system image capture and deploy operations
SPP Installations
Firmware updates
Any other operations that require the mounting of a drive.
The HTTP protocol, used for all Linux and ESXi operating system installations
NFS can be used for Linux and ESXi operating system installations, SPP installations, firmware
updates, and other functions requiring mounted drive. Using NFS is an advanced feature and
requires manual setup of a Linux Media Server and manual changes to the OS Build Plans.
Default HP Media Server layout
The HP-provided OS Build Plans are designed to work with a specific Media Server directory
structure. If the Media Server is configured using this directory structure and naming conventions,
then the HP-provided OS Build Plans will run without modification.
