Executive summary HP Integrity Virtual Machines (Integrity VM) is a virtualization product in the HP Insight Dynamics – VSE to help customers increase server resource utilization and reduce the total cost of ownership by allowing individual operating system environments to share processor core and I/O resources. Integrity VM allows users to specify sub-core granularity.

Prerequisites • The VM Hosts must have common access to storage, such as a storage area network (SAN). • The VM Hosts must be on the same subnets and have equivalent virtual switch configurations. • The VM Hosts must have a private subnet to transfer guest memory images. The subnet must be 1 gigabit or faster. • The VM Hosts must be running Integrity VM version 4.1 or later with the latest recommended patches.

Systems Insight Manager HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) can continue to be used as a data center management tool. In addition to functioning properly on non-VM and non-migrating nodes, it can discover and identify all of the VM Hosts and guests and can access the system properties and events. HP Virtualization Manager Like SIM, HP Virtualization Manager (part of the HP Insight Dynamics – VSE) can access tools such as the SMH for any host or guest. Since HP Integrity Virtual Machines is now supported as a logical server, drag and drop can be used to do the migration.

HP Global Workload Manager HP Global Workload Manager (gWLM) functions in an online migration environment much as it functions in an HP Serviceguard environment. It notes when workloads are running within any given host, and applies the user selected policies to those workloads. If a workload is not currently running on a particular host, gWLM allocates that workload’s resource to those workloads that are running. gWLM’s capabilities are unaffected by the presence of migrate-able virtual machines.

Figure 5: Capacity Advisor: Profile Viewer of Observed Data HP Serviceguard Manager HP Serviceguard and HP Serviceguard Manager both work well with online migrations, provided: • HP Serviceguard is configured with the VM hosts as cluster nodes and the critical virtual machines as packages. • You take care to either manually disable packages prior to calling hpvmmigrate or to use the script /opt/cmcluster/toolkit/hpvm/hpvmsg_move that handles package disabling and re-enabling on your behalf.

Figure 6: HP Serviceguard Manager during an online migration Performing migrations Configuring the environment For online migration to work, the VM Host servers must have common access to storage devices, networks and virtual switch configurations. The pathnames to the storage need not be identical, however the same LUNs assigned to a guest must be presented to both the source and target VM Hosts. There must be equivalent access to guest storage and networks.

However, all the eligible VM Host servers in a group must have equivalent architecture implementations. That is, they must all report the same processor family output for the HP-UX command machinfo -v. Different processor frequencies and cache sizes are supported for Online VM Migration. Table 1 lists the recent Itanium processors showing different values for processor family.

Icon to indicate Migration out of the source Online migrations and HP Serviceguard As of the 4.1 release of Integrity VM, HP Serviceguard is supported with Online VM Migration, provided that the VM Hosts are the cluster nodes, and the VM guests function as packages. NOTE: Online migration of VM guests that are cluster nodes is not supported at this time. As with previous releases, it is not permitted to directly manipulate guests that have been configured as packages.

host), it will be necessary to manually re-enable and restart the package with the appropriate HP Serviceguard commands. The vmmgr tool detects if a VM has been configured as a package. It automatically uses the hpvmsg_move script to initiate online migration in this case. A golden box icon before the VM Name in the vmmgr GUI visually indicates that the VM has been configured as an HP Serviceguard package. Here is an example of hpvmsg_move output.

Monitoring the migration The primary method for monitoring a migration is to watch the command output. The hpvmmigrate command provides a percentage completed indicator for each step of the migration (see Figure 7, above). On the target host, the hpvmstatus command uses “On (MGT)” in the State column to indicate that a guest is migrating onto it. If run on the source host, hpvmstatus uses “On (MGS).” See Figure 9.

Special considerations for HP Integrity VM Manager What you might see When migrate-able VM’s that are not HP Serviceguard packages are defined on a VM Host, the “State” column either displays them as “On” and “Up” or “Off” and “Down,” depending upon whether they are actually running on that VM Host at that time.

Figure 11 shows the vmmgr screen and the corresponding command output, for the case where a VM is not packaged as an HP Serviceguard package.

vmmgr is able to distinguish between a guest that is not running (Off) and a guest that has been migrated to another host (NR). The guest that has been migrated to a different VM Host is indicated. When a user attempts to migrate such a VM, this error is detected and migration is prevented by Integrity VM as shown in Figure 12: Figure 12: Attempt to start a migrated guest in vmmgr The second class of mistake is to modify the guest when it is running on a different VM Host.

Special considerations for working in a gWLM environment As of gWLM version 4.1, there is an integration issue with Integrity VM version 4.1. Because of this, HP strongly recommends not using these products together until either patches or a new version of the product are available. What you might see For the initial release of the online migration capability, there have been no enhancements made to gWLM to track the migrations.
