QLogic iSCSI HBA guide for SAN/iQ® powered SANs Initial iSCSI Setup of QLogic HBAs Follow the recommendations in the QLogic Quick Start Guide covering the iSCSI HBA installation, driver installation, and the SANsurfer iSCSI HBA Management application. It is always the recommendation to use the latest firmware, boot code, drivers and SANsurfer application available from QLogic Support.
the SCSI miniport driver to also be installed. Boot configurations will require the STOR miniport and will not support the concurrent use of NDIS configuration. The following recommended procedure should be performed on an installation: 6 • Removal of previous configurations. Uninstall the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator. Uninstall any previous older QLogic drivers and SANsurfer software. Uninstall the LeftHand MPIO DSM driver.
• Disk Management is used to write a disk signature, create a Basic type of disk, partition and format the volume. Dynamic disks were not tested and are not supported with the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator. • For LeftHand iSCSI volumes which are grown in size, the Microsoft DISKPART utility may be used to increase the volume size and therefore make this new space available to the partition in the operating system. (See Microsoft KB #300415 and/or the LeftHand SAN User’s Guide pages 353-355).
Boot from SAN Windows Boot from SAN configurations requires the QLogic STOR miniport driver. During SLES installation, use the SLES Boot from SAN package iso-dd-kit driver available from QLogic. You will need to decompress (gunzip, winrar the gz file) the iso image and burn this image to a CD for installation. During RHEL installation, use the RHEL Boot from SAN package iso-dd-kit driver available from QLogic. Use appropriate 32 or 64 bit packages.
Creating the first iSCSI volume on the SAN Before a QLogic iSCSI Host Bus Adapter can access a new iSCSI volume it must be created on the SAN and authentication configured to allow access to the volume. To do this: Open the CMC (Centralized Management Console) and create a new volume. Create a “Volume List” to contain QLogic iSCSI volumes and allow read/write access.
Enabling VIP Load Balancing for Performance Virtual IP load balancing, or just load balancing, is a setting on each authentication group within SAN/iQ that allows for iSCSI sessions to be distributed throughout the cluster of SAN/iQ nodes to maximize performance and bandwidth utilization. Most modern initiators support this feature including the QLogic iSCSI HBAs. All SAN/iQ authentication groups for QLogic iSCSI HBA initiators should have this feature enabled.
If all steps have been followed correctly the QLogic iSCSI HBA should log into the new volume. This can be verified in the SAN/iQ CMC by selecting the volume and then the “iSCSI sessions” tab. If a session is listed with the iqn name of the QLogic iSCSI HBA initiator(s) then it is logged into the volume and all remaining configuration will be done from the QLogic iSCSI server. If a session is not listed then something might be configured incorrectly in the volume list or authentication group.
• Make sure all QLogic Authentication Groups on the SAN have load balancing enabled in the SAN/iQ CMC. If there is a mix, some have it enabled and some don’t, then those that don’t might not connect to their volumes Expanding a SAN/iQ volume and extending an NTFS partition on the iSCSI volume • 12 Both SAN/iQ volumes and NTFS volumes can be expanded or extended dynamically. If space is running low on an NTFS volume, you will want to first make the volume it is on larger.
Snapshots and Remote Copy SAN/iQ snapshots of QLogic mounted SAN/iQ volumes SAN/iQ snapshots of QLogic mounted volumes function and are supported in exactly the same way they do for physical servers either booting from the SAN or accessing raw disks on the SAN. Ensure that a snapshot volume is appropriately assigned a volume list with the QLogic iSCSI HBA’s Authentication Group. This volume may then be viewed, enabled, and bound in the QLogic SANsurfer.
SAN/iQ remote copy SAN/iQ remote copy allows SAN/iQ snapshots to be copied over WAN links to remote sites for disaster recovery or locally to clone a volume to the same SAN/iQ cluster. QLogic iSCSI HBA environments can be replicated by SAN/iQ on a scheduled basis for the simplest and most complete DR solution. Remote Copy can also be used for cloning a volume locally and is a good way to copy and deploy additional QLogic HBA volumes for boot farm environments.
QLogic Fast!UTIL BIOS Control and Boot Configuration Note the BIOS options, Press for Fast!UTIL and select the adapter. Note the Main Options Menu. If you are controlling Boot Device Order, Select that option from the motherboard CMOS settings. Note the Configuration Settings options: Host Adapter Settings and the iSCSI Boot Settings. From Host Adapter Settings, Enable the Host Adapter BIOS to support Boot from SAN configurations.
Note the iSCSI Boot Settings. Provided that the LeftHand Networks SAN/iQ volume has an appropriate volume list and QLogic iSCSI HBA Authentication Group defined with appropriate SAN network connectivity, a viewable iSCSI volume may be selected to boot a primary or alternate iSCSI volume.
Note the Scan of iSCSI Devices IDs 0 thru 128. Note the LeftHand Volumes start showing up at ID 64 after the volume has been enabled and bind was selected in SANsurfer. Note that the iSCSI Disk Utility allows you to select a volume to Low-Level format, Verify the Disk Media or Verify Disk Data.
grown defects list commonly implemented for ATA or SCSI direct attached disks. The Verify Disk is useful to ensure that the QLogic HBA can access the raw LeftHand SAN/iQ iSCSI volume. Note the Ping Utility Diagnostic Tool.
QLogic iscli Note the Configure Advanced Settings allows configuration of the KeepAliveTO to 600 and IP_ARP_Redirect to on. Note that settings must always be pushed and saved into the QLogic iSCSI HBA firmware.
QLogic SANsurfer Note the Current state of Link Down as the QLogic iSCSI HBA is not connected to the iSCSI SAN switch. Note under Port Options - Firmware that Jumbo Packets may be enabled (Default size is 1500 bytes), ARP Redirect may be enabled, and KeepAliveTO may be set to 600.
Note that the Target Settings, Config Authentication may define CHAP username and secrets (1 or 2-Way). Config Parameters for the LeftHand iSCSI volume may be assigned.
After making changes on a per target basis, the changes must be pushed down to the QLogic iSCSI HBA to be saved. Current configuration is then refreshed. Networking statistics may be obtained by selecting the Port and the Statistics tab.
Note the QLogic iSCSI HBA Diagnostic options.Ping allows a network Ping across the iSCSI SAN connected via the QLogic iSCSI HBA. Logs are useful to QLogic support technicians troubleshooting issues. Below, Note the LeftHand iSCSI volumes that are allocated access to the QLogic iSCSI HBA’s Volume List which defines volumes and Authentication Groups.

Note that Save Port Settings must be selected to push the configuration down to the QLogic iSCSI HBA. Note that all volumes will be briefly disconnected during a Save Settings options and should optimally be performed during a maintenance or configuration window for the server.
