HP Logical Server Management Best Practices

Figure 6: Fabric names in HP Storage Provisioning Manager 6.3
The fabric names are automatically populated from Matrix OE to SPM (where they appear as SAN IDs as shown in
Figure 6). The SAN IDs are used when configuring the connectivity of a given array, or specifying volume
presentation.
Note that SPM may have additional SAN IDs defined (via the Define SAN IDs button shown at the bottom of Figure
6) that are not known to Virtual Connect Manager, VCEM, and Matrix OE. Since they are not known to Matrix OE,
these fabrics will not be offered as choices when defining storage pool entries. They may exist in SPM for fulfilling
requests outside of the Matrix OE solution.
Figure 7 shows the SAN fabric names available when defining a logical server storage pool entry. The appropriate
fabric can be chosen for each logical HBA port. The Matrix OE software will allocate appropriate initiator WWNs
for each logical server HBA port. That value can be over-ridden by the administrator, if appropriate. Having defined
the logical ports, the administrator would proceed to define the volumes and their properties. A separate section of
this white paper discusses the use of tags on storage pool entries.
