HP Logical Server Management Best Practices

The administrator would select a candidate for each volume and save the storage pool entry. Any necessary
adjustments to host mode or LUN masking would be initiated. The status of the storage pool entry in the Manage
Storage Pool interface would reflect “Presentation Initiated” and then “Presentation Completed”. If the storage
administrator has not enabled automated LUN masking of the volume, the status would be “Presentation Pending”
until the storage administrator manually performs the necessary changes. Use of the “SAN Pre-populated Catalog
Storage Entry” choice for volumes not enabled for automated presentation eliminates the need to wait for these
manual adjustments. Once the storage has been suitably adjusted, the storage details such as controller port (target)
WWN and LUN number will be visible in the storage pool entry (as shown in Figure 23). The appropriate port
selection can be made and the storage pool entry is saved and is ready for use by a logical server. There is no need
to manually adjust the ready checkbox; all storage from the SPM storage catalog is assumed to be zoned and ready
for immediate use.
Figure 23: Defining a storage pool entry (candidates selected from SPM storage catalog)
In the Web Server SAN Catalog Storage Entry example shown in Figure 23, the boot volume has redundant paths,
and thus two controller ports are selected in the Storage Port WWN column (leading to the same boot volume with
the same LUN number), and one controller is selected for the non-redundant path data volume.
The third choice for storage pool entry type is “SAN Pre-populated Catalog Storage Entry”; Insight Orchestration
Designer does not support this type of Storage Entry. Figure 24 shows that storage type. Note that the buttons to add
ports are disabled. This type of storage is used when the storage pool entry will use a storage catalog volume which
has been pre-presented (HBA initiator WWNs and therefore ports already defined and will not be changed). That
port information (including server WWNs, SAN fabrics, and any redundancy information) will be populated into the
storage pool entry when the candidate is selected and saved.
