HP Logical Server Management Best Practices

Figure 25: Storage pool entry fabric information from pre-populated SPM storage catalog
Figure 25 shows that the fabric information is now populated into the storage pool entry, an indication that the
volume has redundant paths, and also shows the Storage Port WWN and LUN information. The administrator can
review the default Storage Port WWNs and select a different WWN if appropriate at this time. Note that the server
WWNs are shown in the table at the bottom of the screen; they have been populated based on the values from the
pre-presented entries in the HP SPM storage catalog.
The storage pool entry definitions discussed to this point have focused on physical servers (ensuring when a logical
server is defined there are suitable storage pool entries from which to choose). Matrix OE also provides the means to
specify storage requirements for logical servers which will be instantiated as virtual machines. The Virtual machine
storage section later in this white paper provides more details.
Details on the storage types and various fields when creating a storage pool entry are covered in the HP Insight
Virtualization Manager 6.3 Software with Logical Server Management: User Guide (available at
http://www.hp.com/go/matrixoe/docs). That document also provides information on adding storage (to both
physical logical servers and virtual machines).
The logical server storage requirements described in a storage pool entry will be fulfilled by storage volumes created
by the storage administrator. The detailed information on those volumes can be provided through one of several
means:
The requirement information is visible in the storage pool entry screens and the detailed information can be
populated into those screens.
The storage requirements can be exported in an XML file, shared with the storage administrator who
supplies details of the provisioned volumes, and the resulting information can be populated into the storage
pool entries via importing a modified XML file.
If using the Storage Provisioning Manager storage catalog, candidate matching entries can be retrieved
(with all details automatically populated into the logical server storage pool entry when the appropriate
entry is chosen).
These various mechanisms enable Matrix OE to adapt to the customer environment as appropriate. If the
administrator creating the storage pool entries is also able to create, present, and zone storage, they can do so as
