HP Logical Server Management Best Practices

SAN fabric names
It is recommended that the fabric names and descriptive properties information be chosen to enable correlation to
storage configuration through interfaces used by the storage administrator (such as Command View EVA and SAN
management solutions).
Management interfaces such as the Virtual Connect Manager enable the administrator (system or storage) to specify
names for the various SAN storage fabric connections made through the Virtual Connect FlexFabric or Fibre Channel
modules. These names are then made available through the Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager (VCEM). It is
recommended these names conform to existing data center guidelines (probably specified by the storage
administrator).
When creating a logical server definition, the system administrator specifies storage (or Matrix infrastructure
orchestration may automate the creation of the logical server and necessary storage pool entries). Logical server
storage pool entries can be created in advance and chosen at the time of logical server creation, or may be created
directly from step 3 of the logical server creation wizard. When defining the storage volumes required by a logical
server, the system administrator chooses an appropriate fabric for storage connectivity. The fabric names displayed in
the logical server interface (shown later in Figure 7) are those that were known in VCEM (shown in Figure 5). The VC
fabric names are typically chosen to match the fabric names specified by the storage/SAN administrator.
