Technical white paper | Matrix OE and SPM Introduction With the release of the 7.2 Update 2 hotfix patch CMSOEPK-72X.3A14 (available in November 2013), HP Matrix Operating Environment (Matrix OE) and HP Storage Provisioning Manager (SPM version 2.2.2) support fine-grained control over controller port usage on SAN storage solutions. Using a new concept called port groups, administrators have tight control over which servers access which volumes through what set of controller ports.

See the Defining Port Groups section for details of how to define port groups. ** Port groups are not needed and should not be used if doing manual zoning. When doing manual zoning, the administrator already has complete control over controller port access.

Each port group contains two controller ports, which will result in one-to-two zoning. Note that there are two (redundant) networks, with one port group defined for each network.

Technical white paper | Matrix OE and SPM Identify logical servers and volumes Once the set of controller ports that need to be off loaded is known, the next step is to identify which logical servers are currently using these controller ports. Doing this is a two-step process: 1. Identify which server (initiator) WWNs are accessing these controller ports. 2. Map these server WWNs back to the logical servers that ‘own’ them.

Technical white paper | Matrix OE and SPM WWNs and the owning logical servers. The logical servers can be output to XML using the lsmutil command on the CMS (Central Management Server). The command is: C:\> lsmutil -list -ls -xml -file ls_list_out.xml The above command will generate a file named ls_list_out.xml. Search and editing tools can be used to find the server WWNs and identify the owning logical servers.

Technical white paper | Matrix OE and SPM Perform rezoning using the script After all preparations have been completed, and the list of server (initiator) WWNs and new port groups have been determined, it is time to do the actual rezoning. Rezone.ps1 is the supplied PowerShell script used to do this rezoning operation. When run, this script will: 1. Find all SPM storage services using the specified initiator. 2.

Technical white paper | Matrix OE and SPM 3. Save the SPE. (This will cause SPM to un-present the volume(s) from the host(s).) 4. When the operation is completed, modify the SPE again. 5. Check the Mask checkbox for the previously unmasked volume(s*). 6. Save the SPE. (This will cause SPM to re-present the volume(s) to the host(s).) When all activations within SPM are complete, the Rezone script can be rerun on the initiator WWN and all of its services.

Technical white paper | Matrix OE and SPM Adding array controller ports when using Port Groups and White List When adding ports to a storage system for which a white list is configured (i.e. HP 3PAR StoreServ), if any new ports are to be used by SPM and Matrix, they must be added to the white list, and the storage system must be resynchronized in SPM. If no white list is configured for that storage system, the storage system must be resynchronized in order for SPM to discover and use the new ports.

Technical white paper | Matrix OE and SPM Summary Using the new port group feature (available in SPM version 2.2.2 and later) gives administrators the ability to control zoning like never before. When automating zoning through SPM, administrators can now control which controller ports are zoned together with an initiator WWN (versus the default of zoning to all ports on a fabric/network).
