HP Storage Provisioning Manager (SPM) version 2.3 User Guide

NOTE:
For more information and access to HP B-Series Network Adviser software, see HP B-series
Management Software - Overview & Features. Download information can be found under
“HP Support and Drivers.
Brocade's legacy standalone SMI Agent is not supported by SPM. SPM will only support the
SMI Agent installed via HP B-Series Network Advisor/Brocade Network Advisor installation
packages as called out above.
For information on restrictions on using historical data collection with BNA 12.0.2, see “BNA
Historical Data Collection performance issues with automated zoning” (page 72).
Roles and workflow
Tasks in SPM can be logically broken out into two categories:
Administrative tasks—by default, SPM defines three different roles to handle the administrative
tasks: storage administrator, storage architect and storage operator. People who fulfill these roles
are responsible for setting up and managing the storage resources in the SPM catalog, defining
provisioning policy, and configuring security.
Consumer tasks—SPM defines by default a single consumer role whose primary task is to request
storage from SPM.
NOTE:
For an explanation of the use models, see Data storage and SPM.
In addition to these roles, the following roles are defined in order to facilitate use of SPM with
Matrix OE: Matrix Service, Matrix Architect, Matrix Administrator, and Matrix User.
The primary tasks, the associated roles, and the order in which tasks are performed are as follows:
1. The storage administrator configures the catalog and imports storage resources into the catalog.
See Importing storage into the storage catalog.
2. The storage architect creates storage service templates.
3. Matrix OE enables a consumer (a server administrator) to create SPM storage service requests
and Matrix OE infrastructure orchestration can auto-generate storage service requests based
on the service template storage specifications. Matrix OE communicates with SPM to find
storage resources that match the requirements in the request and then presents that storage
to the administrator/Matrix OE for use.
NOTE: Storage services can also be created and modified directly from the SPM user
interface.
See Managing storage catalog entities and Monitoring the storage catalog.
NOTE:
In environments requiring the use of pre-presented volumes, and using unmanaged SANs, the
storage administrator must have appropriate initiator WWNs to configure SAN zoning and
LUN masking on the volumes being created. Those initiator WWNs are made available
through the HP Matrix OE lsmutil CLI utility.
Network environments used in SPM must have distinct addresses across all imported networks.
After SPM is configured, each role can be used as catalog conditions require. For example, it may
become necessary to consult the storage architect as storage needs change, or demand exceeds
the created volumes. Monitoring, maintenance, and creation of service requests are ongoing. For
the interactions between roles, see Figure 2.
