HP Storage Provisioning Manager (SPM) version 2.3 User Guide

Required version of Brocade Network Advisor and HP B-Series Network Advisor
A supported version of Brocade Network must be installed in order to manage Brocade-based
SAN environments. For more information, see “Minimum requirements” (page 12). HP B-Series
Network Advisor is available from the following website:
http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/dc_fabricmgr/index.html
Non-Brocade SAN environments must have unmanaged networks in SPM
Storage administrators must provide SPM with information regarding SAN connectivity. In addition,
for non-Brocade SAN environments, an unmanaged network must be created to communicate the
SAN configuration to SPM as described in “Working with unmanaged networks” (page 92).
Matrix OE environments using SPM will need proxy WWNs configured for SPM unmanaged
SANs. The Virtual Connect uplink ConnectedTo WWNs (switch WWNs) are used as proxy WWNs
for SPM to determine fabric/network connectivity. For more information, see “Proxy WWNs
(page 98).
Importing a large number of volumes is time consuming and may result in failure
Depending on your environment, importing 1,000 or 5,000 or more volumes at the same time
into SPM can cause a service crash which requires a restart of the SPM service. Restrict simultaneous
volume imports into SPM to less than 5,000 for HP 3PAR OS, and to less than 1,000 for all other
storage operating systems.
HP 3PAR autonomic groups not supported in SPM
SPM does not support HP 3PAR autonomic groups (host sets and virtual volume sets). Under certain
conditions, SPM can coexist with autonomic groups, but it does not take advantage of that
functionality. For more information, see “Working with autonomic groups” (page 86)
SPM cannot import or resynchronize HP XP/P9000 disk array resources if they are locked by RWC
If resources from an HP XP/P9000 disk array, including pools and volumes, are locked by the
Remote Web Console (RWC), SPM cannot import or re-sync those resources. (This does not affect
SPM's ability to perform mapping and masking during service activation.)
Suggested action
Ensure that all web browsers running RWC are shut down during import or re-sync operations.
See the P9000 Remote Web Console User Guide for more information.
Firmware for HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage Systems
In order to work properly with SPM, HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage Systems must have installed one
of the supported firmware listed in “Minimum requirements” (page 12). SPM does not allow HP
3PAR StoreServ Storage Systems with earlier versions to be imported into the SPM catalog.
Storage Provisioning Manager issues
SPM installation fails
Symptom–SPM installation fails, possibly during Matrix installation.
Possible cause–Username in use during installation contains special characters. A known defect
in the InstallAnywhere installer results in installation failure when the installer is run while logged
into a user account with special characters in the user name.
Suggested action–Log in to a different user account with a username that does not contain the
characters # and !, and attempt the SPM installation again.
Installation of SPM Storage Module fails
Symptom–The SPM Storage Module cannot be installed.
