SPM adapter for EMC® Symmetrix® VMAX®: Matrix support for automation of EMC storage operations via the HP Storage Provisioning Manager

SPM will invoke the adapter to retrieve the volumes from the selected storage pools. When the operation is completed,
the list of volumes will be displayed on the “Import Volumes” wizard window. Select the volumes to be imported into SPM
catalog and click the “Next” button.
Note
The volumes to be imported would have been created using the EMC interfaces. When storage requests are made to SPM
they can be fulfilled using these volumes. DO NOT import volumes which are already in use; volumes imported into the SPM
catalog will be used to fulfill logical server storage requests and data corruption could result if those volumes are already in
use by other servers.

Select the Matrix User Security Group (for typical Matrix 7.2 or later configurations) and click the “Next” button. The next
window will display the list of volumes to be imported into the SPM catalog. Click the “Finish” button to complete the
import volume operation.
Click “Hide” to close the “Job Manager” window.
This completes the importing of EMC Symmetrix VMAX arrays, storage pools, and optionally volumes into the SPM catalog.
SPM will fulfill storage requests from Matrix with pre-provisioned storage (already in the catalog) or use on-demand
provisioning (using the storage pools in the catalog).
Troubleshooting
When the HP SPM adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX is enabled, it can be invoked by SPM to perform operations such as
reading information, changing presentations, or creating/deleting/growing volumes. When the adapter is invoked, there
could be errors performing those operations. This section describes possible errors the user may see in the SPM GUI and/or
SPM logs, and suggestions for corrective actions.
Unable to connect to the remote server
Possible Causes:
The EMC Symmetrix VMAX array management server credentials provided upon array operation are not valid
The EMC SMI-S service (ECOM) may not be running on EMC Symmetrix VMAX array management server.
Suggested Actions:
Verify the use of a valid fully qualified Hostname or an IP address.
Verfiy the value used for the Port. Note that the default secure SMI-S port is set to 5989. Provide the correct port if it
was changed in the EMC SMI-S configuration.
Check that the EMC SMI-S service (ECOM) is running on the array management server. If it is not running, start the
service.
