Installation

When the Matrix Operating Environment is installed from the Insight Management DVD, the HP SPM adapter for EMC

Symmetrix VMAX will be installed under the SPM install path (C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\Storage

Provisioning Manager\EMCSymmVMAX). The administrator doing the installation has the option to exclude the

installation of the adapter (for example, if the environment does not contain EMC storage). If the adapter has not been

installed initially, it can be installed from the DVD at a later time.

Enabling and Disabling the EMC adapter

The SPM adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX storage array will be disabled when it is installed. When the adapter is disabled,

SPM doesn’t allow the administrator to perform import operations on the EMC Symmetrix VMAX arrays. Without the EMC

Adapter enabled, any EMC management must be done via the unmanaged array path (manual editing of SPM XML files).

Enabling the adapter will allow user to import the EMC Symmetrix VMAX arrays into the SPM catalog. This will automatically

include property information regarding the arrays, including storage pools and volumes which can be chosen for import.

The following subsections provide details for enabling and disabling the adapter.

Note

SPM operations result from the manual or automated creation of a storage pool entry for fulfillment through SPM or

provisioning a logical server (directly or from a Matrix infrastructure orchestration service template) which uses SPM

storage. Enabling or disabling the adapter will result in a stop and restart of the SPM service. This may affect ongoing SPM

operations. It is recommended to enable or disable the adapter when no SPM jobs are running.

Enabling the adapter

To enable the adapter perform the following steps:

• Change directory to the adapter install path (C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\Storage Provisioning

Manager\EMCSymmVMAX).

• Execute the batch script adapterController.bat as below:

AdapterController.bat enable

• The AdapterController.bat file will also ensure restart of the SPM service. When the SPM service starts it detects the new

adapter and allows the administrator to select it within the Import Array Wizard and thus import EMC Symmetrix VMAX

arrays. It will be necessary to configure the EMC array credentials.

• The EMC adapter will be detected by SPM when the SPM service is restarted (by the batch script above).

Disabling the adapter

Before disabling the adapter, it is advised to perform following steps as applicable:

• Deactivate SPM services that are bound to resources on the EMC storage.

• Remove the EMC Symmetrix VMAX array from the SPM catalog if it is imported. This will avoid any errors in SPM during its

periodic RefreshResources operations on the imported array objects.

Note

When an array is removed from SPM catalog, SPM will remove all imported pools and volumes from that array.

The adapter can be disabled by running the AdapterController.bat file located at the adapter install path, as below:

• Change directory to adapter install path (C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\Storage Provisioning

Manager\EMCSymmVMAX)

• Execute AdapterController.bat as below:

AdapterController.bat disable

While disabling, the AdapterController.bat file will stop and restart the SPM service.
