Introduction An important enabler of the Adaptive Enterprise is the virtualization of resources, which are pooled and shared so that utilization is enhanced and supply automatically meets demand. Virtualization allows businesses to reduce costs and increase business agility. In a virtualized environment, people, business processes, and technology are focused on providing IT service based on business demand.

Serviceguard packages provide a simple, flexible framework for managing application resources. You can create up to 150 packages; multiple packages can run on each of the nodes within the cluster. Figure 1 illustrates example components of a Serviceguard package. Figure 1. that contains Instant Capacity processors. Processors may be activated and deactivated as often as needed as long as the block of temporary capacity has a positive balance. What is HP Global Workload Manager? gWLM enables you to centrally define resource-sharing policies that you can use across multiple HP servers. These policies increase system utilization and facilitate controlled sharing of system resources. In addition, gWLM provides both real-time and historical monitoring of the resource allocation.

• Simplifying routine/scheduled maintenance—With gWLM running on a secondary server, you can fail over packages from their primary servers to perform maintenance on the primary servers, knowing gWLM will ensure that the applications are allocated CPU resources based on their relative priorities. Thus, your most critical applications will be getting the most CPU resources. After all the work is finished, you can move the applications back to their primary servers. Figure 2 illustrates some of these benefits.

The system used to host the secondary servers can be sized to handle only a small number of concurrent failovers at full performance or can provide complete redundancy with the primary servers. It can also use Temporary Instant Capacity to provide full redundancy—while avoiding the full cost until the resources are actually needed. Figure 3.

Shared Resource Domains The recommended approach in most situations for configuring gWLM in a HA Serviceguard environment is to define a separate shared resource domain for each unit of hardware (complex or server) in the cluster. A shared resource domain is a collection of partitions that share resources. gWLM manages the resources within a shared resource domain. A complex can be subdivided using nPartitions or virtual partitions into multiple hosts each of which can participate as SG cluster nodes.

Using this model for the active/active cluster of two nodes shown in Figure 2 (with caption “Failover with adjustment to resource allocation”), you would define the workloads as shown in the table below. It is assumed that each package can run on either node and different policies can be applied. The set of nodes on which a package can run is explicitly specified in the package definition using the NODE_NAME list. The policies associated with each workload enable the division of resources on each node.

You must also select how to create the resource boundaries between the workloads.

Sharing Resources at Multiple Levels When you share resources within a host as described in the previous section, you can also combine multiple hosts within a server into a single shared resource domain thereby enabling both the sharing of processors between virtual partitions/nPartitions and multiple workloads per host running in those partitions.

Conclusion The combination of the high availability provided by HP Serviceguard and the workload management provided by HP gWLM deliver improved system utilization, improved application performance, simplified failover configuration scripts, the ability to prioritize resources based upon business value, and significant cost savings for disaster-tolerant configurations.
