4 Procedures
This chapter provides information on procedures you are likely to use with Capacity Advisor.
Accessing Capacity Advisor
Before you can use Capacity Advisor, you must access it.
This procedure assumes the following:
You are familiar with Systems Insight Manager. For more information, select HelpFor HP
Systems Insight Manager from the top menu bar.
You have appropriate licenses to use Capacity Advisor on the Central Management Server
(CMS) and the systems you wish to monitor with Capacity Advisor
Procedure 1 Accessing Capacity Advisor
1. Open a Web browser.
2. Enter the following in the Address field (it is not always labeled in browsers):
http://Host:280
where Host is the server running Systems Insight Manager.
3. Press Enter.
A login screen will be displayed (if security dialogs are presented first, respond appropriately).
4. Fill in the User name and Password fields. On a Windows CMS, you might also need to fill
in the Domain. Consult your system administrator to obtain this information.

6. To navigate to the Capacity Advisor Analysis screen, select ToolsCapacity Analysis... from
the top menu bar.
The Analysis screen displays a list of analysis queries. This includes predefined queries and
any custom queries that you own or have permission to view.
7. To navigate to the Capacity Advisor Planning screen, select ToolsCapacity Planning... from
the top menu bar.
The Planning screen displays a list of scenarios that have already been created. If no scenarios
exist, help for getting started is displayed.
Gathering data for Capacity Advisor
Capacity Advisor works best when using generous amounts of data to generate reports and create
meaningful simulation scenarios and collection starts soon after this product is installed and
configured. Data collected by the Utilization Provider is kept on a managed system for 30 days.
The HP Capacity Advisor Data Collection Service updates the data store every five minutes. Any
data transferred to the database on the CMS is kept by default for four years. This time period can
be changed. (See Data retention period.)
To create a meaningful simulation scenario or to view the historical resource utilization of a
workload, you must collect data from representative systems or the systems for which you want to
monitor resource utilization.
Once you have collected the data, you can create simulation scenarios or experiment with different
configurations and workloads to evaluate your system capacities. You can use Capacity Advisor
to plan for the future.
