Configuring alerts for disk space usage
If the CMS or database servers run out of disk space, management functionality might be temporarily
lost. Any operations in progress at the time of the failure might complete with errors. HP recommends
proactively monitoring disk usage for the CMS and database server.
One technique for monitoring disk space usage is to configure an HP SIM disk threshold alert.
Such alerts can be easily configured for any system with HP System Management Homepage (HP
SMH), including the CMS.
NOTE: Threshold alerts can be set for a physical CMS only, where the HP System Management
Homepage is installed (and not for virtual machines).
When configuring disk thresholds, you will be prompted for a Warning threshold and a Critical
threshold. You will also be prompted for a Reset threshold for each. The Reset threshold is the
value below which disk utilization must drop before the corresponding alert threshold is rearmed.
This prevents the generation of multiple alerts when utilization hovers near the alert threshold.
The threshold rules are:
(WarningThreshold + 3) ≤ CriticalThreshold ≤ 99
(ResetWarningThreshold + 2) ≤ WarningThreshold
(ResetCriticalThreshold + 2) ≤ CriticalThreshold
Thresholds are defined in terms of percent utilized.
HP does not have specific recommendations for setting these thresholds. Their ideal values depend
on your specific configuration, growth trends, and capacity management practices. In the absence
of specific requirements, consider the following suggestions:
CriticalThreshold = 90% or (DiskSize – 10 GB) / DiskSize), whichever is less
WarningThreshold = CriticalThreshold – 5
ResetCriticalThreshold = CriticalThreshold – 3
ResetWarningThreshold = WarningThreshold – 3
