HP Matrix Operating Environment 7.3 Update 1 Installation and Configuration Guide for Provisioning with Virtual Resources

6 Configuring discovery and credentials
Discovery is the process of finding systems in the management domain so that they can be managed
from the CMS. HP SIM can automatically discover and identify systems attached to the network
using information from management protocols such as SNMP, WMI, WBEM, SSH, and SSL. Create
discovery tasks to limit discovery to specific network segments or IP address ranges, or to control
the frequency that each task runs. Use discovery filters to prevent discovery of unwanted system
types.
In addition to discovery, you can optionally choose to have additional configuration done on the
managed systems, as they are discovered, by configuring the settings using the Configure or Repair
Agents(CRA) button. Use this to automatically configure the discovered server to send SNMP traps
to the CMS, have the CMS subscribe to WBEM events, or allow the CMS to execute remote
commands. Where this is appropriate in the following instructions, it will be identified as
“(Optional)”.
If the servers you plan to run CRA on have not previously been managed, they may require the
installation of Agentless Management Service, WBEM Providers, Insight Management Agents, or
OpenSSH. Alternatively, manually configure WMI and/or SNMP on those operating systems. HP
recommends that you configure this for all operating system discovery tasks except ESXi. For
example, on an ESX 4.0 or 4.1 server CRA can be used to deploy the IM Agents and configure
the SNMP Traps on that server.
For more information about the options available for discover and configuration tasks, see the HP
Systems Insight Manager User Guide.
When HP SIM discovers a hypervisor host, it also attempts to discover the guest virtual machines
for the host. Discovered guests are recognized and managed in HP SIM and in Matrix OE
visualization (shown in Chapter 10) but will not be visible on the infrastructure orchestration self
service portal or infrastructure orchestration console.
IMPORTANT: Do not discover hosts on which your CMS, vCenter Server, SVCMM server, or
other infrastructure server are guests unless you intend to license and manage the hosts. If you
accidentally discover a host for an infrastructure virtual machine that you do not intend to license,
remedial command line operations may be required.
NOTE: For HP SIM to recognize and manage a server, it must support at least a machine-readable
serial number. This restriction applies both to third-party servers running vCenter Server or SCVMM
server.
Configuring credentials
To configure credentials common to many servers:
1. Go to OptionsSecurityCredentialsGlobal Credentials.
2. Set the SNMP Read community string.
HP recommends that you do not enter any global Sign-in Credentials unless you use a single
small set of administrative credentials for all hypervisors, managed servers, management
processors, and virtual machines.
3. Verify that the WMI Mapper settings are correct:
a. Go to OptionsProtocol SettingsWMI Mapper Proxy.
b. Ensure the host name shown is the fully qualified domain name of the CMS associated
with the IP address.
c. If the IP address is not on the primary network, or if the host name does not match the
FQDN of that IP address, then delete the existing proxy configuration and create a new
one with the correct fully qualified domain name of the CMS.
