HP Matrix Operating Environment 7.3 Update 1 Installation and Configuration Guide for Provisioning with Virtual Resources

Creating templates for Hyper-V virtual machines
Matrix infrastructure orchestration utilizes either a Hyper-V VM or an SCVMM template as the
source material for an Insight Control virtual machine management that is in turn used to construct
a Matrix OE service template. However, to provision recoverable logical servers, configure your
Hyper-V VM host in a Windows cluster. For more information, see your Windows documentation.
When using Hyper-V, do not use a Hyper-V virtual machine management template created from
a VM with Snapshot. Insight Control virtual machine management templates created from a VM
with Snapshot, do not display on the Software tab of the IO console, and are therefore not available
to create a Matrix OE service template.
A Hyper-V template must have a guest operating system installed, along with the Microsoft
Integration Services Setup installed in the VM.
NOTE: Matrix infrastructure orchestration can only deploy a Hyper-V virtual machine when the
boot disk is defined as IDE Controller 0 Location 0 (ide0:0).
Creating a template from a virtual machine stored on a Hyper-V host
To create an Insight Control virtual machine management template from Hyper-V virtual machine,
do the following:
1. Power off the VM you want to use in the virtual machine management template. As a best
practice, cleanly power off the VM by accessing the VM and performing an OS shutdown
rather than using a Hypervisor power off command.
If the VM is in a suspended state when you create the template, provisioning fails during
customization with an error message of “VM must be powered off for customization.
2. In HP SIM click DeployVirtual MachineTemplatesCreate Virtual Machine Template. The
Step 1: Select Source Virtual Machine screen appears.
3. Select a VM from the list, and click Next. The Step 2: Select VM Template Repository Host
screen appears.
4. Select the host that will receive the new virtual machine management template, and click Next.
The Step 3: Specify the template Name and select VM Template Repository Folder screen
appears.
5. In Template Name, enter a name for the template and specify a location for the template.
6. To store the virtual machine management template, in the target folder, select Browse and
select a VM host data store folder. A unique folder will be created at the location you specify
using the original source VM name (not the new template name.)
7. Click Next. The Step 4: Confirm Details screen appears.
8. Click Run Now. The task results appear.
VMM template creation can take from 5 minutes to 30 minutes to complete.
Using SCVMM templates
Matrix infrastructure orchestration enables the deployment of services using the Microsoft System
Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) template library. This is accomplished by selecting an
SCVMM Hyper-V template on the Software tab in an infrastructure orchestration service template.
SCVMM templates are displayed on the infrastructure orchestration console Software tab after
SCVMM is successfully registered in Insight Control virtual machine management.
The SCVMM server itself is not representative of a server pool, nor is it licensed as a target for
deployment.
SCVMM is not a required component for Hyper-V deployment. SCVMM template deployment is
an option that coexists with deployments of Insight Control virtual machine management Hyper-V
templates.
