Backup and restore strategy for Matrix OE with
Matrix KVM Private Cloud
Matrix OE 7.2 configuration can incorporate a variety of software components. HP Matrix KVM Admin Console can
be used to manage KVM Private Cloud. Additionally, the Insight Control Server Provisioning deployment software can
be used to help provision images for physical servers. If any of these components become corrupted or lost, it may be
necessary to restore them from a previously backed up copy. It is also possible that only subsets of these components
are deployed in a customer environment. Hence, the backup and restore strategy is designed in such a way that each
component can be backed up and restored independently of other components in the stack.
Please refer to “Backing up and restoring HP Insight Management 7.2 Central Management Server (Windows)“and
“HP Insight Control server provisioning Administrator Guidefor details regarding the Matrix OE backup and restore
procedures. This document covers only the backup and restore for HP Matrix KVM Private Cloud appliance, Images
repository and KVM Private Cloud HA configuration.
Depending on the component, the backup schedule could be different for each component. For example, in an HA
cluster environment, the cluster configuration environment will need to be backed up only once after the cluster is set
up and running. The following table shows the recommended backup schedule for each of the components.
Table 1: Recommended backup schedule for various components

Online Backup
Matix KVM Private Cloud provides services to create and download appliance backups. If an appliance is lost or
corrupted, it may be necessary to restore the appliance from a backup. Matrix KVM Private Cloud backup is
independent of Matrix OE backup/restore. Images repository is not backed up as part of the Matrix KVM Private
Cloud backup.
The Matrix KVM Private Cloud appliance backup contains configuration settings and management data. It is stored in
a file in a proprietary format. Only users assigned the "Infrastructure Administrator" role have permission to create
and download a backup. Only one backup can be run at a time. A backup can be restored on the same appliance
or a different appliance from the one where the backup was taken. If an appliance fails and cannot be repaired, then
a backup can be restored on a replacement appliance.
Recommended Backup Procedures
1. HP recommends regular backups, preferably once a day. A backup can be taken while the appliance is in
use and normal activity is taking place. It is not necessary to wait for tasks to stop before taking a backup.
2. A backup should be performed before and after the following activities:
a. Software update of appliance
b. Firmware update on the management host
c. Any other software updates on the management host.
3. HP recommends using an enterprise backup/restore management product such as HP Data Protector to
archive the backup file. An enterprise backup/restore management product can be used to encrypt the
backup file. REST APIs are provided for integration with enterprise backup/restore products.
4. A backup should be performed before and after any large scale provisioning activity. It is recommended to
take a backup after activation of new KVM hosts.
5. A backup is recommended before and after changing any Cloud Networking configuration settings.
