HP MFP Digital Sending Software 5.0 - Upgrading from DSS 4.0 through 4.20

Page 2 of 3 white paper
Same Server Upgrades
Same server upgrades are not supported for DSS versions 4.0 through 4.20. DSS versions 4.0
through 4.20 only supported the Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. Since
DSS 5 does not support either of those operating systems same server upgrades are not permitted.
Migrations
DSS 4.0 -> 4.12
DSS 5 does not support a direct migration of settings from versions 4.0 through 4.12 of DSS. If you
have one of these older versions the process is to first upgrade the server to DSS 4.20, and then
follow the instructions below for migrating setting from DSS 4.20 to DSS 5.
DSS 4.13->4.20
To migrate DSS settings from a server running DSS 4.13 through 4.20 to a server running DSS 5
follow these instructions.
1. The server running DSS 4.13 through 4.20 must have two Microsoft components
loaded on it for the migration tool to run. If these components are not loaded on the
DSS server please load them before starting.
a. .NET 3.5 SP1.
b. Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package. This package can be
downloaded from:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555
2. Install DSS 5 on a new server
3. Copy the contents of the following folder from the DSS 5 server to the server running
DSS 4.13 through 4.20:
<Install Path>\scripts\LegacyDssConfigurationBackup.
4. Register the hpcscp.dll
a. Start a command prompt and navigate to the folder where the files were
copied to in step 3 above
b. Run the command: “regsvr32 hpcscp.dll”
i. If this step fails with a message that says “LoadLibrary(“HPCSCP.dll”)
Failed” run Windows update on the server and try again.
5. Run the LegacyDSSConfigurationBackup.exe utility from a command prompt.
LegacyDssConfigurationBackup.exe key <key> -path <path> -help
Where:
key is an optional parameter used to specify the encryption key for the
output file.
Note: If no encryption key is specified the output file will be unencrypted and
no passwords will be saved in the backup file. If the file is not encrypted then
the system administrator will have to manually re-enter passwords after the file
is restored. (There are many places in DSS where passwords may have been
entered including: credentials for SMTP servers, credentials for authentication
servers, credentials for shared folder access, etc.)
-path is an optional parameter that specifies the path for the output file. The
default path is the same folder from which the utility is run
-help is an optional parameter which will output help for this executable
