Performing Linux System Administration Tasks
About the Sysadmin Account
Use the sysadmin user account to perform system maintenance tasks and to maintain Neoview
Loader logs. When you log in to the Linux system as sysadmin, the system displays a menu-driven
screen:
You have logged on to linux-platform as sysadmin.
The following are your options:
1. Log maintenance
2. Run secureserv
3. Run bash shell as sysadmin
0. Exit
Example 7-1 shows how to set up automatic log rotation:
Example 7-1 Setting Up Automatic Log Rotation
Please enter your option now:
1
Enter the log name (or Q/q to quit):
/opt/tandem/genus/gel/log/load
You entered /opt/tandem/genus/gel/log/load Is this correct (Y/N) [Y}:
Would you like to set an automatic log rotation (Y/N) [N}:
y
This example shows a directory that potentially could have many log files.
After choosing option 1 to get into log maintenance, you must supply the full path name of the
log file to be backed up. You are then prompted as to whether you want to maintain this log
automatically and, if so, at what intervals. The default is n, no log rotation. If you enter y, you
can choose the rotation frequency as shown in Example 7-2 (page 92):
Example 7-2 Log Rotation
W - Weekly backup
M - Monthly backup
N - No automatic backup
Enter D, W, M or N: w
You entered w, is this correct? (Y/N/Q) [Y}:
creating weekly rotation of logs
Please enter the length of time (in days) you wish these rotated logs to exist. Enter 1 to 180:
If you want to remove an auto rotation for a file or directory, follow the same procedure, but
when asked the frequency, enter N for no automatic backup. After confirmation, the previous
auto rotation is removed. This means that the logs stay where the application process (in this
case, the cmserver and gelserver) placed them.
