Neoview Database Administrator's Guide (R2.5)

2 Getting Started
Your system is delivered ready to use:
The system is preconfigured.
Table spaces are available and ready for data.
ODBC server software is installed and ready to go. For details about installing ODBC drivers
on client systems, see the README for the HP Neoview ODBC Driver for Windows or the
README for the HP Neoview ODBC Driver for Linux, depending on your client platform.
This chapter provides an overview of the Neoview platform and covers the administrative tasks
you need to perform when you first receive your system.
Additional administrative tasks are covered in
“Partitioning For Tables and Indexes” (page 19)
“Managing Database Objects” (page 19)
This chapter describes:
“Security Considerations” (page 13)
“Management Tools” (page 14)
“Starting the HP Database Manager (HPDM)” (page 15)
“Starting the Neoview Command Interface (NCI)” (page 15)
“Working With Database Objects” (page 15)
“Stored Procedures in Java (SPJs)” (page 17)
“Viewing System Events” (page 17)
Security Considerations
Limited Access on the Neoview Platform
Neoview is a secure platform to which access is limited to a few controlled entry points:
ODBC or JDBC
Neoview HP Database Manager (HPDM)
Neoview Command Interface (NCI)
Neoview Performance Analysis Tools (NPAT)
Each of these entry points is carefully controlled by the Neoview operating system and database
software. The operating system also enforces a support policy that allows for support and
maintenance activities while at the same time preventing access to customer data.
Connection Timeout
ODBC and JDBC data sources timeout after ten minutes on a idle connection. After the connection
has timed out, you must log in again to reestablish the connection and submit a query. The
ten-minute default time can be changed by HP Support.
