Installation Instructions
If you are installing the hardware providers for the first time, proceed with the installation normally.
If you have a previous version of the hardware providers installed, then remove the previous provider
version using the Windows Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. Alternately, the installer will
automatically remove the previous installations of the hardware provider software. Before removing
the hardware providers, issue a net stop VSS and/or a net stop VDS command from the
command line.
You must install HP StorageWorks RAID Manager Library before you install the hardware providers.
If you do not, the providers will install but will not function. For information on RAID Manager library
versions, see “Prerequisites” on page 4.
There are two installers for the hardware providers:
• HP_StorageWorks_VDS_VSS_Hardware_Provider_XP_v7_01_00_x64.exe
• HP_StorageWorks_VDS_VSS_Hardware_Provider_XP_v7_01_00_ia64.exe
NOTE:
Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core and Windows Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 run only on x64
servers.

guide (T1634-96089, November 2009). The guide is included with the installation software package
and provides detailed installation and configuration instructions.
Compatibility/Interoperability
• For the VSS Hardware Provider, if any XP volumes are imported, they will be imported into ALL
of the XP Host Groups that contain a WWN of an HBA configured in the server. This could be an
issue if you use HBAs from different vendors, since the different vendor HBAs may have different
driver parameters.
NOTE:
This may cause a failure if the multipath software tries to failover I/O from one vendor type HBA
to another vendor type HBA. HP recommends using only like vendor HBAs in a server to avoid
this potential issue.
• VDS Hardware Provider software running on Hyper-V Guest OS and VMware VM will not provide
multipath (MPIO DSM) related information and will not perform multipath operations.
