ColorSpan Legacy Print Server - Using the EPS / Bitmap Manual Tool

2
Introduction
Beginning with print server software version 7.00, the ColorMark Pro and RIPStation print servers have
had the capacity to manipulate EPS image files and assign custom page sizes for printing. Beginning
with version 8.40, that functionality has been extended to include TIFF and JPEG image files. This
document describes these features, known as the EPS/Bitmap Manual tools, and explains how to
configure your ColorSpan software to take advantage of these features.
To use the EPS/Bitmap Manual tools, the image file must have been sent to the print server via the
ColorSpan Image Utility (CSIU), which is included with the ColorSpan Legacy Printing Tools for your PC
or Macintosh. The older ColorSpan Download Utility, which is no longer updated or distributed, can also
send files in this manner. For details on the ColorSpan Downloader in general, see Tech Notes #2526
(Apple Macintosh) and #2527 (Microsoft Windows). Print jobs sent from applications such as Adobe
Illustrator, Photoshop, etc., can not take advantage of the EPS/Bitmap Manual tools.
In the instructions that follow, print server software 8.40 or newer is assumed. Older versions may have
a slightly different appearance than what is described, but the same principles discussed will apply.
Bear in mind that print server software version 8.40 or newer is required to work with TIFF and JPEG
files in the manner presented here; versions 7.00 to 8.30A can accept only EPS files.
Configuring the ColorSpan Legacy Print Server
On your ColorSpan server, click and hold on the port (AppleTalk, Winlink, etc.) you wish to configure.
Select “Configure” from the menu that appears. In the new window that opens, look for a radio button
labeled “EPS/Bitmap”. Click this button to show the EPS/Bitmap Manual print mode menu. Set this
menu to “Manual”, then click on the “OK” button to save the configuration and close the window. For
detailed explanations of the other options in this menu, please consult either the print server online help,
the System Control User Guide, or Tech Note #2506, Guide to Print Server Configuration Options.
Configuring the ColorSpan Legacy Image Utility
On your Macintosh or MS-Windows workstation, launch the ColorSpan Image Utility (CSIU). Consult the
Printing Tools User Guide, MacDermid ColorSpan user document 0700001B-1 for Windows and
0700001B-2 for Macintosh, if you require assistance installing and/or setting up the CSIU.
The CSIU has two modes, regular and “pass-through”. The regular mode supplants the server features
described in this document, allowing the CSIU to perform some, though not all, of the functions of the
EPS/TIFF Manual Tool described later in this document. To use the CSIU in this manner, please
consult the aforementioned User Guides.
To use the CSIU as a utility to send EPS, TIFF, and JPEG files to the print server for use with the
EPS/TIFF Manual Tool, select “Preferences” from the ColorSpan Image Utility menu (MacOS X shown;
Windows is comparable):
