7 Backup sys tem adminis tration
The optional RISS backup system is the final line of defense in the integrated RISS data-protection strategy.
The RISS backup system uses Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) to create backups of RISS data.
This chapter is intended for administrators who use the RISS backup system. It describes the processes
involved in accessing the RISS backup server, configuring TSM, and managing smart cells, and contains
detailed procedures for maintaining and labeling backup files and media.
RISS backup s
trategy
The RISS back
up option is the final line of defense in the integrated RISS backup strategy. The first line
of defense i
s that each smart cell group contains two mirrored smart cells. If either of these cells fails,
then the sur
vivor can be “cloned” to recover the mirrored pair. To offer further protection, when a RISS
is replicated, the replicated system also maintains t wo additional cells that can be used to recover the
originals. The RISS backup system is utilized only in the event that all mirrors and replicas are lost.
After the RISS backup option is installed, administrators have the choice of which RISS store doma ins they
want to bac
k up. All store domains can be ba cked up if desired.
Tivoli Storage Manager
Since RISS 1 .2, Tivoli Storage Manager 5.3 (TSM) is used to perform backups to external media.
RISS backup administrators should have a thorough understanding of TSM before attempting backup
procedures. This guide explains the most i mportant TSM concepts involved in RISS management.

Gaining
access to the RISS backup server
ARISSsy
stem that has been configured with the backup option has one central backup server machine
that ru
ns Tivoli Storage Mana ger software. This backup server is n a med “INTERNAL” and is available at
IP 10.0
.105.1. Use any of the following m ethods to access this backup server:
• Use the RISS K V M console to access the backup server directly.
• Use the RISS PCC for remote access:
•Click
Tivoli Console on the Backup Page.
• Use a remote console program like V NC. (Use the PCC’s I P address.)
• Use the command line shell from the Tivoli administrative console program (dsmadmc, with user as
“admi
n” and password as “admin”).
The availability of these options depends on the access mod e that is configured for your RISS. Discuss
this w
ith your HP ser vice representative.
Smart cell data backups
After a RISS storage domain has been configured for backup, each smart cell group in that domain
performs a backup every hour. Any new data filesthathavebeenstoredinthegroupsincetheprevious
backup are combined into a single aggregate file and backed up.
